Just in case anyone else suffers from this problem
to the point of there being no free memory at all and the computer crahses.
I have just found the cause of this. I use Avast as my virus checker and it is their additional plugin "webrep" that is causing the problem.
So, I uninstalled WebRep and all is good again.
