I upgraded one of my systems yesterday to see what was up. It took a while to get my laptop fully upgraded. For the most part, everything seems to be in order. No glitches or issues. All of my previous programs seem to run as they did in Windows 7.
It wants permission to send all data to Microsoft. I didn't do the Express method and said no to all. It seems to be in this new age of wanting to know when you wipe your ass like the phones, but you can deny it. So no biggie there.
I choose my own Browser and other default programs. You don't have to swallow the Microsoft Koolaid.
It seems to have a usable easy access calender. They have a new Browser and have ditched IE. I will check it out, but haven't yet. It seems to have some new features that may be interesting.
Overall, I haven't found anything yet to regret the upgrade.
When I fired up the Laptop this morning, it asked which system I wanted to use, 10 or 7. So you can still use Windows 7 if you choose. FWIW :P
I think I'll pass for now. There's a lot of talk about the privacy issues with Windows 10. Microsoft states that they will read all the data that you have on your PC (websites visited, software used, email, etc.) and can pretty much use it as they see fit, including selling the information. No thanks.
My computer guy at work suggested that I not upgrade for at least 1 month.
I bought a new laptop a few months ago with windows 8.1 on it for testing out my software etc. 8.1 is a really awful operating system especially without the start menu etc. Anyway, I upgraded the laptop to 10 yesterday and it's a big improvement on 8.1
One problem that I have found so far with the new EDGE browser is that it has some bugs in it in that it doesn't always behave as it should when the site uses javascript. For example, my web applications open new windows using javascript window.open command and then sets focus to the new window so it brings it to the front. With EDGE this doesn't always work and sometime the new window loses focus and goes behind the main window that called it. Really annoying to say the least. I did a search and yes there are lots of people complaining about the same thing so hopefully that will get fixed soon. Other than that, so far I really like it......so far...
I'm running it on all three of my computers now. All of the installs went well with no issues. I went through all three computer settings and individually adjusted the permissions. A lot of people have issues with Microsoft wanting to monitor activity. You can just turn off the stuff. I think the days of just installing a software and forgetting about it are over. I think I have to monitor what my devices are doing. A lot of the permissions have to do with sharing between devices. I don't do any networking between PC's so I just close those holes up.
My Norton updated with a new program prior to the Windows 10 release. So, my protection software works well with Windows 10 with no issues.
One issue I found with my DAW is that on boot, it sometimes doesn't grab the audio correctly. Reboot fixes it. It's a known bug and should be addressed quickly. Overall, I like it and I'm pretty happy to be current with all of my systems. For a while, I was running XP and had no updates.
I really intensely dislike the windows 10 start menu crap, but what a relief as I found today an application called ClassicShell from http://www.classicshell.net (free by the way) that enables you to replace the windows 10 start menu and tiles etc with a standard windows 7 start menu and it is very configurable too if you wish.
Got this on all of our windows 10 laptops now, so much more efficient rather than wasting time trying to find where microsoft have hidden all the functions that we are all used to using.
Give it a go, really great.
I know what you mean, but I think I'm in too deep now. It's rare that I have to use the start menu though. Just to shut down really. I found that the Windows 10 File Explorer is a shortcut to all of the things I need. From file explorer > This PC - Most of the goodies that I use are at the top, like system properties, Add or Remove programs. The properties button to the left on that screen is your control panel. Then it works the same as the Windows 7 stuff. Any program that I use repeatedly I have dragged an icon to the bottom bar.
Fuck that App shit, I deleted most every fucking one of those tiles. LOL
Edit: I just looked. I have no tiles. I got rid of all of them.
