The Watering Hole

OK, I need to find some software that is good, but affordable to transfer\rip some DVD movies and store them on my iPod, for use while travelling, etc.
Has anyone here done anything like this?
What software have you used?
How much does it cost?
How long does it take?
What is the quality of the transferred movie\TV show, etc?

I'd first go looking for something that's free and open source.  There's usually something perfect there!
