Although my Alesis Monitor One MK2 speakers give excellent sound quality and fantastic low end I need to free up some desk space so I was wondering if anyone here uses active desktop monitors, if so which brand/model and what is the low-end like ?
thanks
Jon
I've been using KRK V4's for a long time now - 6 years? thereabouts.
low end is surprisingly great for such small speakers.
don't think they make these exact monitors anymore - no idea how the new stuff compares.
Thinking about this again the biggest space waster on my desk is the Alesis RA300 amp that drives the speakers. If I could get a mini hifi amp and then stand the speakers upright that would do the job nicely. So, any recommendations on a mini hifi stereo amp with bass/treble controls etc ?
As an experiment I've just ordered one of these tiny little amps....amazingly only $25 !!!! Worth a try for that money !
I use M Audio BX8's. They are pretty good for the price. I got a great deal on mine at GC, but they are a few years old now.
Jon, most of those amps sound ok if you don't push them. They get into a lot of THD well before their rated max power. Let us know how that one is. I've been wanting to buy one of these (one brand or another) for a while.

Yes, the specs are not that great as the THD is pretty high at 0.4% but I thought that for the price it has to be worth a try. It should be here in a couple of days so I will let you know.
It arrived today, plugged it in......absolutely amazing. I really wasn't expecting too much, but it really does the job well and has plenty of volume without distorting. Incredible little amp and only $25 !!! The EQ (bass and treble) isn't enough for my needs though as the Alesis Monitor One Mk2 speakers do tend to be a bit mid prone even though they are supposed to be flat, so I will get a mini eq (9 inch rack) to sort that out.
Absolute bargain and frees up tons of desk space.
Highly recommended.
edit: Don't need a graphic eq after all. A bit of repositioning of the speaker cabs and everything sounds excellent.
I can't rave enough about this little amp....what a lot you get for so very little money...amazing.
I am so close to gettin these it hurts. The sound is unlike anything. I love them. Do everything speakers. Buy some speaker stands for gods sake.
