Our local shop is having a blowout sale this weekend so I figured I'd check it out this morning. Stumbled across a new Peavey Vypyr 60 watt tube combo. I've played on a solid state 75 before, and didn't think much of it. But the 60 tube version has a pretty killer JSX model that I really, really liked.
They had it marked down from $449 to $299 (yes, it's new), and the Sanpera I pedal for $75. Figured what the hell....at that price. Been playing for a couple hours at home and I really like this thing. Sounds good with my ext cab hooked up. I may try to get a clip posted later when the kids are at the movies.
Didn't get a chance to record, but this song was apparently recorded with the same amp:

That guy in the link above did several vids with his Vypyr 60, and sounds really good. I got from the gist on the posts that he was a traveling musician...but is now no longer living.
Wierd. And sad.
But he pulled some good tones from this amp using the JSX model I'm digging.
Sad about the guy, that's a pretty cool song.
How are you liking the amp a couple days later?
Nice I hope the amp works out for you.....
I'm really digging the JSX model on this thing. I've owned a JSX, and this thing is close. Not spot on, but close. There is a little nice mid-range chime I got on the lead channel of the original when soloing that is missing. The original just 'sang', if that makes sense. But still working on the EQ-ing to hopefully get closer.
Rythm-wise, it nails the JSX. Between the 1x12 combo and 1x12 ext cab I have, the tone is very rich and full. The highs are crisp, but at the same time they don't take your head off when it is turned up. The only word that comes to my mind is that it sounds 'Deep'. Very full, very rich, and easy on the ears.
I WILL say this amp is not for country/blues players. The lower gain models are decent at best. Even with the onboard tubescreamer,
They lack 'fullness'. And richness. And a whole lot of other 'ness-es'.
But in the JSX and 6105 amp arenas, this thing kicks arse. The tone is just thick, meaty, and fantabulous.
Try one out. You will like it.
Johnny,
Glad you are digging it. Dar has a different model of the Vypyr and said similar things. Didn't care much for the low gain models, but said several of the higher gain models were really good and worth owning the amp for just for them. The JSX was his favorite. And he had a real JSX sitting right next to it to compare it too.
DTR...Do you know if DAR has a solid state or a tube version? I didn't like anything on the solid state one I played several months ago.
Sounded too much like a Line6 Spider 3 or 10 or whatever version those things are on now. 'Hollow' is the word that comes to mind. Mid scooped, crunchy as hell, with zero tone to speak of whatsoever. Kind of like running from guitar to DOD Death Metal Pedal straight to a soundboard.
DAR is pretty tonally acute. I have to assume he has a tube version. But curious nonetheless.
I think he has the 75, which is SS. He was so into the JSX model he was telling me to buy one just for it and one of the other high gain models. (Does it have a 5150? That might have been it).
It has the 6505.....which I have a pretty kickin' Brown sound dialed in on :)
yep! And I think he liked the Triple X also.
