The Watering Hole

Finally got time tonight to switch some speakers around.  Previously, I had the Eminence Wizard (G12H clone) in the open back cab that was built with the High Octane head cab.  It sounded great there, but I've been itching to try it in one of my closed back Avatars.

Tonight, I put it in one of the Avatar Cabs.  Then, I replaced it in the open back cab, with the Red Fang Alnico (Celestion Blue copy that handles twice the power) that I just got from Dar.  The only problem is that I did this after the girls were in bed so I can't try either til tomorrow.  Well, really try, that is.  I tried both at lower volumes.  I think I'm going to really dig both, and am especially excited about the Red Fang after hearing Jamie's  Blue in his C30.  These alnico speakers have a chime and sweetness in the highs that is addictive!

I'm thinking that  while I can swap at will, I'll probably end up with the Wizard connected to the Rebel 20, the Private Jack/Avatar (Greenback clone) attached to the High Octane, and the Red Fang hooked up to the Valve Jr once the mods are done...  That leaves my Governor (V30 clone) to go in the Lopo cab.  That should cover a LOT of ground with these amps.  Plus, having all 8 ohm speakers, I can chain any two of them on the 4 ohm amp outs.   8-)

Still want a Tonespotter though...   ;)
now I'm even more excited.  This morning before work, I played the High Octane into the Red Fang for about 5 minutes, then the Rebel into the Wizard for about 5 minutes.  Both sounded GREAT.  The Red Fang is really a nice speaker.  Sounded great clean to mean in an open back cab.  The Wizard sounded very good in it's new home too.
you guys can't hear this, but I'm humming the theme to Jeopardy.   :D
LOL...
I know what you mean Howie, last weekend I finally did a little project I had been wanting to for months - I got my ENgl, Rockmaster, and Marshall9001 preamps cleaned up and racked with a patchbay, along with my G Major and Krank all hooked in.  The default setup is Krank with G Major in loop, hooked up to my Avatar cab.  By adding in a patchcord (and of course changing where my guitar is plugged in) I can switch to any of the 3 preamps into the G Major and back to the krank power section and cab.  I also have the routing options setup where any preamp including the Krank's preamp can be routed to my Daw for direct recording, with the G Major included or not depending on how I patch things.   Oh, and I also have my Fatman Radius 3 tube compressor with instrument inputs routable in there, my intent is to use for bass.

I have been having a blast every night this week plugging in and jumping from sound to sound.  Like a pod with no presets, but better yet, no modelling!
I have an amazing number of Excel worksheets to keep track of my patchbays - damn those things can be brain benders while you're trying to make sure everything will be hooked up correctly!
yeah, I've never ventured into the Patchbay world.  I'd have to call Craig and borrow 30 cables or so just to hook one up.   ;D

Paul, one thing that has me excited as well, is that the Egnator does have an effects loop, so I now have a GOOD sounding pre that I can record with and use the Rocket amp/cab sims.   The High Octane has no loop (I might add one some time.  A) for recording purposes, B) to be able to put a verb or other things in the loop, and C) I eventually want to build an 18 Watt plexi and I could use the HO high gain pre with the 18 watt power section!) I still wish I hadn't sold my Rockmaster though...

Back to the speakers...  I know some guys are hooked on the V30 thing.  Mine isn't going anywhere, and is certainly my favorite for some things, but it is cool to have other good speakers for different tones.  The greenback sounds really good with EL84 crunch.  And the Wizard and Red Fang both sound really good ANYWHERE on the gain scale that I've tried them so far.
yeah same type of deal Howie, it's cool to have options without resorting to a modeler to get them.

Now if only a Mesa pre would drop into my lap...  ;)
Glad you like the way the speakers sound amigo.
yep, so far, they are working out great!  Next up, some insulation in the Lopo/Governor cab.
Cool Howie! I'm looking at an Emi Wizard as well. Good to know you like it.
