The Watering Hole

Ok, managed to get this into my 7 string without burning the house down, lol.  Very awesome pickup in that it is very balanced and has great note clarity in chords.  I think the tricky part is that it handles mids so well that its easy to over do them a bit.

So here's my start at dialing it in on the Krankenstein, which is enjoying a new lease on life suddenly :).

One of these days I hope to be able to play more smoothly, got a little choppy trying to remember what i was playing lol...

And yes, I have a ground issue somewhere...
ground issue in the guitar or the house?

I like the sound of those things (I have the D-Sonic in my baritone... not the same, but same neighborhood... sort of) - big fan of dimarzio stuff!

definitely have the mids happening. are these IRs? there's something going on with either the room or reverb or something that's making it sound a bit ... boxy? hmm, not sure what the right word for it is.... kind of an almost vowel sound underneath the main sound. dunno. I like the gain/distortion style.
The clip is cool, great grind to the distortion, gotta agree with sheep however, a bit boxy (that is the right word I think, SEMI congested might be harsh though, but that's kinda what I got from the mids here ;)), but that's an easy fix. Nice to hear that you're still giving the Krank a reason to be cranky.  :P  :)

Crunchlab is an awesome pickup.  I had one of those in my JP6.  Great metal pickup.
hmm, did i overdo the verb?

yeah a bit too middy for my tastes as well but it's just so easy to keep adding them with this pup.

Brutal!  Which tuning is that?
In the still of the ni-i-ight!

I love the distortion of those Krank amps.  Is that straight in?

The hum and buzz sound pretty minor to me, more like house power issues than guitar wiring... We use so many amps full of ancient parts, we'd be lucky to get that little hum at even 1/4 of that gain level.
Howie, it's my 7 string in standard tuning.

Charger -  no its got a Wylde OD in front with gain all the way down drive all the way up and tone at noon.  Just tightens it up a hair.  I prefer it to my Maxon OD 9 because it has lower minimum gain and a less severe EQ curve.  Still in search of the perfect pedal for that duty as there is a tonality I am not 100% happy with, and I think I'd like something that can be 0 gain at minimum setting.

better sans verb!

do you want a clean boost? RC is good for that. EP might be good too, I want to try one eventually.
On my Recto I was always fond of the Analogman Beano Boost.  Loved that pedal.
Yeah I have a hard time figuring out all the different xotic pedals... I was thinking about maybe the BB preamp comp with the 3 way switch for normal-comp/Timmons-comp/no-compression modes as well - seems to cover a lot of territory but i don't know if it can get completely clean.  LOL I'm not even sure what I want.  I just know I want to hit the amp slightly harder than I can without pedals, and have not found the exact sound with a BBE Boosta Grande (straight boost, no EQ), a Wylde OD, or a TubeScreamer (Maxon OD9).  THE Wylde gets the closest of those 3 but I'd love to be able to roll off the guitars volume and have it really clean up, the BBE can do this but it doesn't have any tone shaping options.  I actually need to get it out and try it again based on all the changes I've made.
and just for fun, here's this, Wylde OD > krank gain left, Uber pedal > krank clean right.

ooh, nice! pedal side seems to have more mids - true or perception?

great tune!
I believe that's true, I haven't perfectly balanced the sounds yet and I'm not sure I want to.  Maybe they could stand to be a little closer tho.

And thanks!  It's some random thing I've had sitting around forever and can never seem to connect it to any other riffs so it will probably just get shoved in as a segue somewhere.
Just checked out a video of the AC+ from xotic...  Wow!  That may be overkill for what I am after but looks incredibly flexible.

I have read that the AC is also DS-1 based like the Wylde, but cleans up better. That may be the ticket...

damn GAS!!!
I know I told you this before, but   TIMMY or the new Barber Gain Changer!
That sounds good!  Have to listen again with headphones instead of laptop speakers.
TIMMEH!!!!!!!!!!

Thing is, I'm not a fan of being in a waiting list to try something out...
I think I was noticing a similar mid focus that seems to be a part of the bogner pedals. it's not bad or anything, I'm just super attuned to it after the last ten days.
If you want less mids and more of a scoop, try the AMZ mosfet boost... it's a pretty common circuit out there that uses a very high input impedance to make a really sparkly, punchy boost.  The AC and RC are both based on the tubescreamer, but have better EQ... I believe they use a baxandall EQ which is one of my favorites... you can either add lots of high and lots of low or you can pull the EQs back and get more mid.  Flexible.
only thing I don't like about Baxandall stack is that you can't add just bass or treble.  You add both at the same time.  More flexible than some, not as flexible as others.
huh... all the bax's I've seen use two filters, one for bass, and one for treble... boosting both makes a smiley face, cutting both boosts mids, boosting one brings up either lows or highs, cutting one vice versa...
