Just started messing around with GarageBand on ipad. Marvellous bit of kit, except it would be nice to be able to export the audio stems for each track to import into something else for mixing.

Have to get myself a proper interface for it though as at the moment i am just dicking around with headphones and the internal mic
I got Garage band on my I-Pad it ain't impressing me all that much I still use my old DAW which is waaaaaayyyyy more comprehensive. There is another app out there that does 48 tracks and is a true multitracking recording device Aura (maybe) is it's name.
Auria is it' name. http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2012/01/17/auria-48-track-recording-system-for-ipad/
I actually don't want many tracks so 8 is plenty for me, guitar bass, drums and maybe a vocal or two.  I just love the simplicity of it.
I have messed with it some.  Actually plugged it into monitors and used the drums for a little gig.  But i havent tried to record with it... No interface yet.   Been meaning to buy one but started hearing the devil word "latency" and backed off.

Holy News Flash Batman!!!  Really???  ;D
The built in guitar amp sims suck ass in my opinion, but you can get good results by micing a real amp using either the internal mic or a mic input converter. The immediacy of it is very good in that you just switch on and go and the sampler is very good fun! Worth it just for that
I think it not bad at all. For guitar recording I like amplitube for iPad.
I own the Fender Edition and I use it with the Paeavey link interface. Again, not a Vibrolux but better (and cheap) than many "digital toys" in the market...

Here a short sample using the iPad, amplitube fender, peavey link and the fulldrive.
( drum tracks are done with sonoma drum SW for iPad)

I love garage band on the iPad, I think it's better than on the Mac... especially when playing instruments.  I have no idea how they got the drums etc to be touch-sensitive for velocity... that's pretty stunning... and also playing guitars and bass and bending strings is sweet.

My big complaint is that you can't edit MIDI tracks... seems like an obvious and glaring omission.
so one question for all of you.  I read that due to the design of the iPad itself, it had latency issues.  I backed off immediately from buying an interface.  Then I read a couple weeks ago, that IOS6 addressed this and it's fine now.  But what I first heard was that it was hardware related, not software.

I was considering updating to a new iPad, hoping it would be better... but that would mean I couldn't use the $150 worth of attachments I bought for the first one without yet another $30 adaptor.  I could have a VERY nice laptop of PC for what I already have invested in it.  Just saying...
Latency is only an issue if you actually use it to record. ;)

Speaking as an iPad 1 user, I thought the latency was decent... in fact I hooked my guitar up through the Sonama Wireworks GuitarJack and got playable latency through the GarageBand amps...
I've the iPad 2 and I've never had a problem with latency but my only experience with guitars and the iPad is using IK multimedia iRig and the Peavey link interface.
Don't know about other interfaces...

I just tried th free version of amplitube and I have to say that there is no noticeable latency with it at all.  Garageband does have some latency issues though.  All good fun
Any interface yet, Jon?

Yes I bought the irig interface that plugs into the headphone socket which then doubles as guitar input and headphone output. Not bad ata all for a travelling recording studio
ok, then I'm not so scared now, because I heard that was one of the worst for latency.  From what I ready the ones the plug into the bottom iPad port are all better than ones that plug into the headphone jack.  Charger's buddies is supposed to be the best device.  A bit pricey though.  The L6 one is interesting...
just been fiddling about with garageband again this evening and it really is very good.   Just sat on the sofa, headphones on playing the acoustic (just using the ipad internal mic) and then adding some drums and bass...such a very quick and easy experience to put a song together.  Just wish there was more variety on the drum sounds ( anyone know if there are any drum add-ins etc that are available for it or is it a completely closed environment?)

You can in the latest version. Just double-tap the midi area you want to edit and then select edit and you can then add/delete/move notes and change velocity etc.
just been sitting on the sofa dicking around with garageband playing my sons fender acoustic guitar.

two short tracks.  The first one included here I am playing real acoustic guitar recorded via the ipad built-in mic and I "finger tapped" the drums and the bass on the ipad.

Both are straight off the ipad mixdown....quite amazing as a truly portable studio.

The best usage I think I will get from garageband on the ipad is for writing songs. It's a great way for creating the basic format for a song by creating the complete layout of verses and chorus etc using the onboard instruments. Then export the mix and import it into your DAW and buld up the song with real instruments by playing along with the ipad mix and then of course finally rmoving the ipad guide track completely. I can see this approach is going to work well for me just using the ipad for fleshing out ideas.  This has given me the kick I need to get back into this milarky.
yeah, that's what I mainly use it for these days - a quick way to put a progression together and see how it works.

I also like the keyboards with only the "correct" notes available! heh
only the correct notes???? Cheater!  LOL

I want to find a good interface that isn't too expensive.

There are "correct" notes???  :-?
for a particular scale
