The Watering Hole

or anybody else for that matter.   ;D  Need a recommendation for a recording interface.    Looking either firewire or USB.  Looking at 2 XLR input.  If it happens to have SPDIF in, that would be nice but not necessary.  Most important thing I'm looking for is the quality of the pre-amps.  Sub $600.  Undecided if I'm just going to use it with my laptop or with both my laptop and desktop.  Laptop is OSX Lion (MacBook Pro, Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, Firewire and USB2).  Desktop is a newer Windows-based Rig (Ivy Bridge I5, 8GB RAM, USB3, etc).  Generally using for live applications, but might use for multi-track work eventually.  But that is a really big might...LOL.

Ones I've been looking at have been the Apogee Duet (Mac only), Focusrite Saffire Pro 24, MOTU Ultralite MK3 Hybrid, and the MBox.

Or should I save the bills and just get a Tascam DR-100 MKII and add a couple of good mics?
RME babyface.  RME has the best drivers IMO, and excellent preamps.  There's a silver version of this on Google shopping for $558.

Hey bro, the one at $558 (Juno Records) is based in London.  I bet that ends up being a little more than $558 with shipping and duties.  LOL  Most domestic prices around $749.  Just a little more than I'm wanting to spend.

Looks like a top notch unit though.  May have to consider saving a little more scratch.

Do you have any thoughts on the ones I mentioned?
Hmm...looking at their site more and looks it might top out at $600 shipped.  But this doesn't include import duties.  Hmm...
Same company has them on Ebay.  Says price closer to $689 + shipping.
The price I see, from adding to my cart and specifying the United States, is $577.69 from Juno... that's a good price, and a really good price considering it's from England.
Of the other options, I like the symphony but I think it's overpriced for the feature set (and Mac only).  Of course there's the Duet... good price, Mac only.  I like the preamps on the focusrite but I am not impressed with their drivers.  If you want something that will be rock solid, RME is choice number one, everything else is in distant second place...
