The Watering Hole

Just thought I'd see what a few people thought of this tone and what could possibly be tweaked to further nail it. I like it FWIW, outside of tigher playing and maybe a different speaker, think its sounding pretty cool, maybe could be a tiny bit brighter (?) to cut through in a mix more.

Zero pedals here, straight into the amp...

Old Skool Marshally Sample

Sounded like the Bogner. Is that what you were using?
I'd noodle with that sound for a while. It was enjoyable.

I kind of hear what DBM was talking about - sounds kind of like the mid-gain stuff on the Alchemist (as I recall).

Is that the old Marshall or are you pulling a fast one on us... :)
Tripper

Heh, good guess both of ya, was just fooling (not well  :P)...definitely needs work, think its the speaker I mic'd, the v30 is not always the answer, lol! I'll try a better clip this eve with a different speaker and more time to tweak knobs. From what I've been reading, the G12T-75 is seldom the preferred choice, but in some rare cases it works really well with certain amps, especially if its an old non-Chinese, well worn in one...for the new amp I JUST bought, many onwers really like those with it. I'll be throwing a mic one of my ancient G12T-75's soon and see for myself.

Didn't wanna mention it here, mostly because I've been on the amp merry-go-round for the last year (6505+, Marshall, Bogner, etc), call me Craig #2, lol...but this IS my DREAM amp, its what I had my heart set on before the Marshall in fact, but its just that the boutique store owner I found the Marshall at didn't have one in stock at the time (there is a four month backorder/wait) so I caved and bought the jcm800....well, the dude called me on Sat, said he just got ONE in, gave me first crack, I went and played it, NO WAY I was passing it up, fuckin' killer tones as expected/hoped. Took the Bogner back. =)

Here's a youtube vid of a 15 year old using the 2008 version of the same amp, he's obviously got the tone dialed in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB548yhJzvE

The great thing about the 2009 models is this "loop master" knob the guy put in. I guess the only real knock on the amps was they are just to fookin' loud, so the work around for bedroom wankers was slapping a volume pedal in the loop, cranking the amp, lowering it all via the pedal, seemed to keep the cranked tone as is - that trick usually doesn't work but with these amps for some reason it did, so he did some R&D, applied it and bang, sounds/works perfect.
Congrats Schilsy!  I think you're really gonna dig that amp.  I've heard one many times (guy in one of my fav Christian  rock bands plays one and I've seen them live about 10 times, no I don't have tickets stubs to prove it ;D).

And contrary to popular belief, a V30 is not always the answer.  Try a Wizard with that thing and see what you think!
splawn... man, awesome!

sounds very nice

Thanks! I do dig, very much! It does everything the Marshall does had it been hot-rodded/modded and then some. They have this "gear" knob thats basically a channel switcher for what has been cloned, 1st gear is basically a hot rodded Plexi, 2nd a hot rodded JCM800, 3rd a super hot rodded 800. It has soooo much more gain than the Marshall yet its very tight and clean sounding, no boost pedals needed here, lol, though its kinda cool to have that added flavor if one wants. Thats basically what I've realized about my tastes - I'd rather have an amp that has more than enuff gain and then be able to back off it to a comfy/playable spot vs one that does not have enough juice to begin with and trying to force it into that territory yet sound pretty clean/noise free.

The Splawn guy catches some heat from folks because he's so religious and throws it out there - he has a message about his faith somewhere on his site, "supposedly" there is a bible verse slapped inside each head etc (I didn't spot one)....I don't give a shit about that stuff, I'll never be mistaken for a religious guy - all I know is he makes great boutique Marshall voiced amps! He first started modding Marshall's back in 1996 and several years later decided to start building amps instead (though he still mods as well). The amp is extremely well built, all by hand, everything is US, even the transformers. It seems he can't make them fast enough, has only around 4 people working with him and has about a four month waiting time from order to your hands and its only getting longer due to demand.

probably better that he's religious in that way.. instead of the dumble guy's way - religious about his amps, to the point of deciding if someone was worthy of owning one. heh.. or so I read once... dunno, might be urban legend. still, who cares - splawn amps totally rock!

also agree about amp gain - so much nicer to not have to use a pedal - vol. pots on the guitar win for tone imo.
D,  just remember that, even though you "don't give a $hit about that stuff" you now have the power of God on your side, so ROCK ON!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Those amps are bad!  More gain and more balls than any Marshall I've ever heard, and yes, built like a tank.   When I looked up close at Brads after one concert, his gain was on 4-5 and it was like a Mesa dual rec with more balls.   Again, CONGRATS!  That's a big time score, bro!
