Are these any good ?

A lot of bread for a distortion unit. I always liked Boogie products. I have had 4 of their amps over the years, but that said I can get all the tones I got from the Boogies out of my $600 Hot Rod Deluxe with a few stomps in front.

I would try to locate a Nady TD1. http://www.dirtbox.net/features/reviews-archive/nady-td-1-tube-distortion/

I don't know how much it would sell for in the UK, but I got 2 of them and I like them very much. There is tone control like you won't believe. I been using the one in my pedal board for about 8 years every single day, and iut still sounds great.
I have heard mixed reviews on them.  I played a Mesa DC-3 the other day though, what a killer combo.  My local shop is trying to sell it for $700 but I'm going to offer $550 which is closer to what they go for on ebay... yah, I hardly need another amp but there is something really special about the smooth gain of the Caliber series Mesa lead tone...
It's kinda like having a Boogie Recto preamp in a pedal.  It would probably sound best plugged straight into the power section of an amp.

I had a Badcat Xtremetone and it sounded like ass in the front of the amp, but sounded awesome straight into the power section.

If you ever get a chance to check out a Mesa Heartbreaker, you should.  Those are really cool amps too.
The Blackstar HT Dual looks like it might be worth a punt, a lot cheaper than the mesa pedal !
Haven't tried the pedals, but I like their amps.  Very versatile amps.
