in readiness for the sessions with my son at the rehearsal studio I just bought a zoom R16 - excellent portability and then just transfer the stem tracks to the pc for mixing etc.

Well that was very odd :o I only uploaded/clicked once but it created two threads....very strange.
Charger: Yes, it does have built-in mic preamps. It's a fantastic little unit. It allows recording onto 8 separate tracks simultaneously and there are 16 tracks in total to record onto. Playback can play all 16 tracks, but you set the levels of the first group of 8 then switch to the 2nd group of 8 to use the same faders on those. But, that's all good as I got it for nice easy portable multi-track capture as I will only ever be mixing down on the computer just by copying the stem tracks from the unit to the pc via usb.
All round excellent piece of kit ! (English slang for a very nice piece of equipment :) )
