The Watering Hole

I recently bought one of these and I have to say it is truly awful...really bad.

It's just one huge honking great tone sucker.  As soon as I kick it in all the bottom end and mids of my tone just goes away leaving a very brittle top end and very little else.

It is now on ebay.
Kinda surprising.  Supposed to be a re-issue of a classic.

Get a Barber Tone Press!

Back in '76 I actually had one of the original Dynacomps (actually lost it many years ago, no idea where it went) and that was always a great pedal so the re-issues certainly are not the same circuit at all.

I've read good things about the barber tone-press, might look into that.
Unless you want a squisher, it's the one to get.  If you want one that does the squisher thing, I'd look at Wampler Ego and of course, the Keeley.  Wampler can do subtle to normal to squish, according to reports.  You can't go wrong with the Barber though.
No, not really after a squisher, just something that takes the edge off a bit but can also be used as a clean boost of course.
ever tried an EHX Blackfinger? it's really nice.
EHX Soul Preacher is very nice too.
Carl Martin.  Ask for it by name.   :D
What the hell, I will get one of everything  :)
That's the spirit, Jon!   ;D
GAS forever gnaws at the stomach. You must feed the beast, and buy them all........
;D  It is very odd that as soon as you get the sound that you want, the very next day it's "not quite there" so you go dicking around forever fidling with this and that instead of just getting on with it and playing. (you meaning every one of us).

All good fun though :)
Your ears and listening method were probably just different. They Dynacomp and the Ross compressor (identical circuits except for two resistors) haven't changed in 40 years, and are by far the most cloned compressors in existence. (I've made three myself)  And yes, that design is well known for chopping out a ton of bottom end.  That's why I like to use it in front of a Big Muff... really cleans and tightens it up.  But not a good compressor if you want fatness.  An optical comp, which might be way too heavy of an effect for you, is much better at retaining bottom end. Several companies make Ross/dynacomp clones that include a blend, so you can mix in some dry signal with the compressed signal... that tends to help stabilize the bottom end.

Surprisingly, the Klon is great for this.  Because of the germanium diodes, when it's clean it's not really as much of an overdrive as a lightly compressed boost.  It has this great compression to it that does exactly what you say, but never really gets too compressed--it's not really a compressor.  And of course it goes into crunch territory if you push the drive...  The Orange Squeezer uses germanium diodes in the same way but to achieve "real" compression.

That's the spirit!!!  :D

Much better than this approach:  ;)

Get a Boss CS2.  It cuts off the highs instead!    :P
