She's a V2 I bought new in November of '80.  Natural finished maple / walnut body and 5 piece maple / walnut neck.  Ebony board.  I was there when the UPS man brought it in and I just had to have it.  It was my only axe for a while.  I wore a lot of the gold off (Nice player) but ended up not caring for it too much.  At that time clean to me meant just the amp's maximum distortion sans disto and od pedals and this thing sounded too much like a pussy Strat.  I kept it because they were kind of a flop and nobody wanted them, so it was basically worthless.  They only made them from 1979 to 1982.  Not extremely rare, but more desireable now.

It has the boomerang pickups.  Basically two short single coils per pup butted end-to-end in a v shape each one covering three strings.  Designed to compete with the strat sound but still be humbucking.  Mine measure 13.31K (bridge) and 12.95 (neck) so they're hotter than a vintage single coil but paired with the maple really shine for clean tones.  Unique sound for sure.

The neighbor kid talked me into breaking it out.  Sounds amazing through the Rebel, especially the neck pickup.  It's a beauty and I am glad I didn't sell it.
pics! Clips!!!
I used to like staring at mine - damn light too, but nothing I needed.

Will do.  As soon as I get a few minutes to do it justice.   :)
wow, i have never seen a V like that. very kewl.

Yep, nifty looking rig!
My buddy back in high school had the matching Explorer...  Rich bastard!!!
Hmm, on second look, I think his was darker overall, but I remember the store where he got it had a matching V very similar to yours, only darker as well....

Yes, they made them in walnut with the maple sandwiched too.  Those Explorers were hot looking.  I sort of recall the body as being a tad smaller than a standard Explorer.

They made some of the V2's with custom paint and apparently they are worth more than the walnut or maple natural ones, but don't look as good to me.  I like to see the wood grain.

I had no clue when I grabbed mine, but it was the third most expensive Gibson that year.  I like the neck, it's barely over 5/8" thick at the nut, but not flat like some thin ones are.  Really comfortable.

Gotta get back to studying...

LOL! Same here man!  :D I remember those, the pups were very cool! The Explorers had the original Gibson "Dirty Fingers" pups.
