The Watering Hole

I don't normally post about new guitars since they come and go so fast that posting them would be a job unto itself, but this is one of those little pleasant eBay surprises. I just got a Brawley Threat 122 Lousianna Ash guitar with Canadian Hard Rock Maple neck, Rosewood fretboard, Wilkinson VS100 trem (the best bridge EVER), Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90 in the bridge and 2 Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the middle and neck positions.

I had never heard of Kieth Brawley until I found this guitar and I guess this is an el cheapo line, but I have to say that I am continually pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of these cheap Korean axes. The neck is not bad, still not as nice as a Carvin neck, and down the road it may be replaced by a Carvin with stainless frets and a bare ebony board.

The Phat Cat P90 is a new thing for me. At home through a modeller (RP1000) it sounds nice enough, won't really know until later on tonite at our Friday gig whether or not I like the pickup. Never ever owned a guitar with a P90 in it before.

Here are some pics of the guitar. Notice the sexy contours. Came with a nice Fender hardshell case and straplocks and all, not bad for $300.

Forgot to mention I sold off some Warmoth parts to buy it, my Warmoth project was getting out of hand cost wise so I just said fuck it and bought this, the whole guitar cost about what I was going to have to pay for pickups alone on the Warmoth project. Even if I end up putting the carvin neck on I will still only have $500 invested in the instrument.

Thats a beauty and keeper, like that, good taste, congrats.

Nice looking instrument.
Looks like a Douglas that used to be available at Rondomusic.  Is it Chinese or Korean?
As the post says, it is Korean. A few important differences bettween this and any Douglas guitar. 1)Seymour Duncans 2)REAL Wilkinson VS100, not that cheap crap knockoff Wilkinson seen on so many imports.

I used it for last nights gig and it is an intersting instrument. The P90 is a very honest pickup. Captures a lot of subtle things in my playing, I can hear differences in how I fret notes, in picking dynamics, etc... that are somewhat masked by humbuckers.

I am very impressed with the locking tuners and bridge. I was violently shaking the guitar using the whammy bar during some points in the night and the intonation remained flawless. I mean I was really beating the shit out of the thing. ( I guess that's why i always used to have to keep extra Floyd's and Floyd parts on hand, often when playing I forget to baby my instruments.)

Again, best $300 I ever spent on a guitar.
