The Watering Hole

I have just ordered 64 bit pc that I intend to use only for audio as my old audio pc has just become far too slow.  It's a bare metal machine so I can put whatever operating system on it I like (and I have quite a choice  ;)  and I could go 64 bit operating system or 32bit, it will take either).

Obviously I would rather install 64 bit windows 7 on it, however, does anyone know if 32 bit vst's will run inside a 64bit DAW or do I need to stick with 32 bit for my DAW software in order to use my 32 bit vst's. ?

After reading up on this I will probably go with 64 bit OS and 32 bit Reaper and all my 32bit vst's.  I will end up with a nice clean machine that will be used for audio and video only, nothing else.  The old audio pc was only ever used for audio but it is just too slow for many vst's etc...a real pain....anyway, I'm due some new equipment :)
I did a new machine recently and one thing that I did makes it REALLY smoke.  I installed an SDD for operating system and programs and an HDD for storage.  Operating system boots up faster than hell!!  Program launch is substantially faster and get into memory substantially faster.  Best decision I made in the upgrade (the rest doesn't suck much either  ;)  ).
look into this. lets you load 64bit plugins into your 32bit host and go beyond the 2GB limit. i use it with 32bit cubase 5 in windows 7 64bit. works great, a lot more stable than 64bit cubase was for me

That looks to be just the job !

Excellent, thanks

Yep, that's worth thinking about.
Just reading more on Reaper 64bit version.  Seems it already has bridging built-in so it can use 32 bit vst's.....  Will give this a try when the new machine arrives.....and then the mammoth task of installing superior2 again !
New pc arrived last week and it's still in it's box !  Been so busy this last week just no time to get stuck into it, which is both good and bad.  Good that business is up, bad that I have no free time ! back to the grind !
What did ya put in it Jon?

Still haven't set it up yet, hope to get some time in a couple of days to do it, but I will start off with 64bit Windows 7 and  64bit Reaper (that can use 32 bit vst's which is a bonus)  using Roland Quad-Capture usb sound device and then have to load up superior 2 again...which takes forever as it's about 20 gig !
Just finished the installation, been at it most of the afternoon.

I installed.

Windows 7 64 bit
Reaper 64 bit
Superior 2 64 bit
lots of 32 bit vst's  (64 bit reaper bridges these automatically so all work perfectly)
Cool edit pro 2.1 (32 bit - my preferred audio editing software, great for mastering)
Sony Vegas pro 9.something 64 bit (video editing)

Souncard = Roland Quad Capture

I have not tried recording yet, but damn this machine is lighting quick....it's actually a pleasure to use !
Now what you miss is a good antivirus..and everything will slow down as always!!

;D

Just joking! Congrats for your new setup!

:)  Actually I'm not putting an antivirus on the new machine at all because I'm not connecting it to the internet.  You are right, an antivirus would kill the productivity of it completely.   This is purely for music production.
