I used to have a thd hotplate when I had a DSL50, but for some reason (can't remember why now) I sold it when I sold the DSL50.
Well, I have just bought another hotplate and hooked it up the my peavey classic 30. It's a bit of a fiddle as the speaker wires from the amp go directly to the speaker and they are very short, but with a bit of patience I soldered in an external socket and all is good.
Really cranking the C30 opens up some really nice juicy sounds. Even the clean channel has a really nice saturated sound at full crank.
There just is no comparrison with putting pedals in front of the amp to try to get the same sound. The cranked output valves also gives that lovely compression where you get a nice spongy feel as you dig-in and the amp kicks back.
It is just so easy to get the sound that I have been looking for, simply by turning up the volume. Of course, I always knew that, as "live" it's a breeze to crank the amp, but now I can at home !
Here's a little sample of it mic'd up with sm57. Most of the overdrive is coming from the output tubes in this example with volume cranked to 10 o'clock. Just "monkey-ing" around with some zep riffs.
oops, it didn't attach to this message, so I've attached to the message below
