The Watering Hole

So in my trade in for the Mini Recto I also got one of these.  All I can say is it is exactly what I wanted.  It is pretty versatile with a switch for mid boost (ala screamer), clean (no mid boost) or fat (which I haven't even tried yet) plus treble and bass EQ.  The absolute best part for me is that the gain knob goes from pristine clean to... well I'm not even sure what it goes to because I use mine at a hair above minimal, and the Level all the way up.   It has a sweet spot where I can leave it on all the time, switching to clean channel stays clean, but going to gain channel has just that little bit of extra goodness you expect from a boost.  My old boost/drive pedals are for sale, lol...
Ah, so this is the new thread.

Glad you are digging it.  Heard lots of good things and the TC stuff in general is good so I expected this to be good.

When you get bored, try this.  Rather than level all the way up, try to set it this way.  Depending on what channel you are using...  on the clean or push channel, turn it up until it just starts to make your pre-amp start to overdrive.  On your gain channels, leave it around the same range but maybe a little more.  rather than all the way up which just blasts V1, this "cooks" V1 with a hotter signal but doesn't push it into full compressed meltdown mode.  The amp won't be as loud since you aren't pushing it as hard so turn the volume up to the same level it was before to compensate.

See how you like it.  The effect is not the same with every amp, depending on design, but it's USUALLY better than just slamming V1 with everything you have.  In many cases, the level or volume cranked all the way on the pedal simply pushes the first gain stage into complete overdrive but to the point of significant compression.  Now, here is where I might lose you... LOL   IF you still like it better turned up all the way, chances are good that what you are liking is the compression of slamming V1 to the max.  If thats the case, my way plus a comp might actually sound better too you as it can be more open.   Just something to try when you get a chance.  What I am suggesting is what David Barber calls "tube cooking."  Dar and I had a discussion on this several years ago and he gave me all the reasons its better than a "volume all the way up" thing.  Again, this is amp dependent.  Just something to try.  You're still slamming V1, just leaving it SOME room to breath.
I have a pretty good guess what's in that circuit based on the sound samples and the controls.  I'm not surprised you're happy with it. Samples? I'd love to hear it through a clean channel with the gain at 9, noon, and 3 o'clock... or whatever.
