The Watering Hole

Gear

Ok, I've decided more gear must go.  I have two Avatar 1x12's and one Avatar 2x12.  Either the two 1x12's will be sold or the 2x12 will.  Whichever is sold will have my Greenbacks in it/them and I will have the speakers I want in the one(s) that I'm going to keep.

But enough of the background for this question!

Is there really any good sonic reason why I should choose to keep the 2x12 over the two 1x12's?

The reasons I'm considering keeping the 1x12's are simple:  I can use only one if I want, I can move them apart for more stereo separation, I can send different outputs to each speaker and I can angle them to spread the sound.

In other words, does having both speakers in ONE cab sound better than having each speaker in its own, smaller cab?

If it makes any difference, the two 1x12's combined are definitely larger than the one 2x12 (so I would assume there wouldn't be as much - if any - "air" lost inside the cabs).

So?  What do you guys think? :-?
I dunno, a 2x12 would sound different of course... bigger box, two speakers sharing the load (not working as hard). whether that's a big enough deal? meh, probably not.

In my case, the only real argument for a 2x12 (the one that made me go that route) was power handling. I couldn't run a 100w amp through a 1x12 and use "normal" speakers. Even with two, I managed to kill a lead 80 somehow. :\
Well, one of the tricks I would like to be able to do (since my VHT 2/50/2 is a stereo amp) is to power one speaker from each channel (I could do this with either the 2x12 or two 1x12's).  One of the many interestings thing about the 2/50/2 is that either channel can be Class A or Class AB, so there's lots of experimenting to be done!

Of course, I can always daisy chain both 1x12's from one channel (the usual configuration if there's no need for stereo) so the power handling would be the same as going mono to the 2x12 (same ohms load too).

Unfortunately, I don't see the ability to play at Sheep-sonic levels anytime in the foreseeable future so the cones should be safe!  ;) ;D

All I can add is I agree with ya - if it puts some funds in your hand and you won't notice the missing gear, just sell it (whichever)! I like the 2x12 mono setup, think youd get more mileage/ease out of that.

I'd keep the two 1x12's if I had a choice.  For your reasons plus several others.  And they should sound better, especially with Greenbacks...

oh, FMI, all closed back?
I have 2-12 cabs, and that is what I would do if I had to rid myself on either of your cab solutions. Of course the more speakers, the more air you move, and the different cab designs may have a different sound. So I would try both cab setups with your favorite speakers, and give each of the solutions a good several hour session. after all it is easy to swap out the speakers.

The one thing that may make a difference is having one speaker on top of the other. The farther the speakers are from the floor makes a big difference in the tone, and the pup/speaker interaction.

More of a partial open back and my intent was actually to sell the two Greenbacks and keep the Vintage 30 with G12H 70th Anniversary Special (from a prior question thread, everyone, yourself included, indicated that the G12H would sound better than the Greenback and the Vintage 30 was the best of the bunch - plus I already liked that combination).

I'm leaning towards keeping the two 1x12's, but I'm still more than a little undecided...  Thanks for the opinions!
Only ego maniacs use multiple cabs!  :D

Craig, IMHO, especially when using different speakers, given a choice (and you are) I'd choose to keep the two 1x12s.  A) you always seem to have more than one amp.  You may not always want to use both, and you WILL prefer one speaker over the other with most of your amps.  It might be this speaker with amps 1,3 and 4 and the other one with 2, 5, etc....  In a smaller room you can stack or put them side by side.  In any room with stereo power amp you can separate them for more space in your sound.  The 1x12 cabs are much deeper than the 2x12 cab, reducing the cab reflection effect on the speaker cone and increasing bottom end.  And, even when using both, you won't have the double effect of two speaker bouncing sound waves around and hitting the back side of the cone so clarity should be better with each in its own "house."

And for the record, I DO NOT agree that the V30 is the best overall.  I like my Wizard the best (G12H clone) and I can tell you several guys at Bertapalooza preferred it with both of my amps, over the Governor (V30 clone) and Private Jack (Greenback clone).  The Wizard and G12H are my two favorite speakers I've heard so far, and that includes the high dollar alnico models (Jamie's Celestion Blue and my Red Fang).

The words Ego Maniacs are synonymous with Guitar Player, meaning they are all Ego Maniacs.
;) Yup!

ha, "somehow!"   ;)      However, I bet you're one dude that if you came to Bertapalooza, Charger and I wouldn't even complain if you were too loud!  Charger would be saying "go ahead turn it up and drown all those other suckers out!"   ;D

Of course, Matthew M.F. Bender would TRY to give you a run for your decibel dollar.  I brought a 7 watt amp this year, because it's all about dynamics for me.   :D  (inside joke for attendees)
heh, yeah... I really don't know if I blew it out or if it was just defective or what.

I really thought I'd kill the g12h30 or v30 I've had in there first... heh, oh well. the t75s sound ok for now.

for the 'too loud' stuff... I do have limits! I noticed that I was starting to get damage (cracks, etc) around the door frame of the closet the cab is in... so I turned it down a little ;)
LMAO!    Dang man!
