Ciao !

Depends on how many features you want.  The CMATMODS DEELAY is very good.  The MXR Carbon Copy has it's own thing but is very popular.  And, don't laugh... the new Boss DD-7 is very good.  Then you go up in price and features to the Nova, the Timefactor and a couple others.  Depends on your price range and how many features you want.

I have the Line 6 and while cool, I never really use all those features.  I keep thinking I'll sell it for a Deelay or something simpler, but then I"ll screw around with it and think "ah, that is cool. I hate to get ride of that."

I've been really happy with my EH Deluxe Memory Man with Hazarai.  It goes beyond "normal" delay features.  In fact, it's pretty fucking whacked.  But it definitely provides loads and hours of inspiration.  I posted about it earlier... I haven't gotten around to posting a clip because I've been so slammed with mixing other people's stuff.  But it's got it all--really solid plain old delay, really nutty modulation, some really different things (for example, you can use the multi-tap dealy in a bunch of ways, one of which works like a really bizarre swell...)  And a 30-second looper on top of it all.  For the price and the strangeness of it, I think it's one of the best deals I've ever made.

I see a Carbon Copy on my quick needs gear list.

Eventide Timefactor.  Period, end of story.

Frankly, this thing can hang with some of the BEST analog units.  I've had so really fine delays and this thing is the shit.  Stereo delay with 2 INDEPENDENT delays.  You can range your delays from slapback to 3 seconds.  It has a phrase looper, multi-tap, reverse delay, vintage delay w/chorus, etc.

In stereo, you are going to be pressed to find ANYTHING better short of a really expensive rack unit.  My fav set is a Ping Pong delay with the left side set to 500ms and the right side set to 650ms.

What I also like is your sound still sounds like YOU; it alters your sound the least of any pedal I've ever tried.

You can find them on eBay between $280-300 used.  I know it's kinda pricey, but it will be the LAST delay you ever buy (I'm done looking).

Run this interactive demo on a set of headsets.  http://www.eventidestompboxes.com/TimeFactorDemo.html

Carbon Copy is an AWESOME analog pedal for a decent price.

yeah that was a nice demo. I don't use delays very much so my GNX2 is good enough for my use. In fact I only use delay on one tune in the 9 years I have been recording. Anyways that thing looks very comprehensive.
Actually Chris, the only reason I didn't recommend it more highly, was the price.  Many guys don't want to spend more than $150-$200 for a delay.  Like you and I said though, depends on what you want. If you want a really trick one that does it all and sounds great, the choices are few and all expensive.

This is one of those things you know far more about than I do though.  I've tried a lot of certain kinds of pedals, and a few of others.  I've only tried 3-4 delays in the last year, and the Time Factor wasn't one of them.  I was going to buy a Nova a few months back, and then heard several things that I didn't like about it, although I'm sure it's good as well.
Howie, I'd steer you away from the Nova also.  My buddy Jason got a Nova System (which he was excited about) and didn't dig it at all.  The thing he didn't like was it rolled off his highs, changing the tone.

The only 'affordable' delay I'd own is the Carbon Copy.  It's not digital, but it smokes.

I don't know if I could pay that much for 12 seconds of looping.  Looks like a nice pedal, though.  I tend to like things that are a little quirkier... my last delay pedal (that's been holding me for years now) was a Boss DM-2.  Short on features, really limited delay time, but start twisting the knobs, and it was insane...  The EH approaches that level of insanity for me, but it's repeatable and it's got more "designed" weird sounds.
thanks for all the info, i decided to go with this.... looks interesting, has what i want and it goes well with my satchurator. ;D

Forgot about that one Aaron.  Haven't heard it but, if it's as good as the Satchurator, should be a winner.
Chris,

I don't know if this applies to the Eventide or not, but the Nova converts your whole analog signal and what comes out is all digital.  To those of you who are shaking your head going "duh, it's a digital delay, you moron,"  that's not how they all work.  In many the original signal is unchanged and only the repeats are digital.  This my sound insignificant, but despite a bunch of Nova lovers, some say it's a deal breaker.

If you get a Deelay in the shop, let me know what you think of it.  It's been on my short list for a year, along with the CC and perhaps the DD7, which does more than either and is supposedly the best Boss delay ever.  I tried it and the CC at GC, but both in a less than desirable rig.  Both sounded pretty good.

It's funny though.  There's a demo of the Marshall pedals on You Tube and all of them sound REALLY GOOD.  But it's a really hot guiltar player with a great guitar and amp, but those inexpensive pedals all sounded really good in his rig.  Some would think it crazy to through those inexpensive pedals in front of a great amp, but people do it all the time with great results...

I don't know about the Eventide, but it alters the sound of your guitar the least of almost ANY delay pedal I've owned (the only pedal I've owned that has stayed as true is a Diamond Memory Lane; the Eventide is on par with it as far as sound quality except with far more flexibility).  The two separate delays with stereo ins and outs make it a dream pedal for stereo rigs.
