Just had a nice big bottle of Bud, and damn I'm feeling good ;D
I believe yours is better than ours :)
It must be! I've had beer in 18 different countries and, flat out, the WORST tasting beer I've ever had is Budwiper (albeit, it IS the best marketed).
It's different here - still shit - but nowhere near as shit as it is in the US.
I passed a bud back to a barman in NY saying it was off.
He replied - nah that's good - it's what that shit tastes like.
He gave me a flat insipid guiness as a replacement :)
it was miles better though.
In the US I change to drinking JD - never drink shorts anywhere else. (aisde from Moscow and with Russians and Ukranians)
West coast micro breweries are ok - if a liitle flavoured.
it's like tea in the US - forget about it.
The US doesn't do beer or tea.
US is JD and coffee land for me ;)
CraigBert — Jun 12, 2011It must be! I've had beer in 18 different countries and, flat out, the WORST tasting beer I've ever had is Budwiper (albeit, it IS the best marketed).
have to disagree here...
Bud LIGHT is so much worse than regular Bud... it's got to be the worst.
Agree mostly with fingers re: US mass production beer (also on coffee but I don't like tea anyways, so I don't really care about that one ;)).
but, Sam Adams has been improving the US mass produced beer product for a while now. There are some decent varieties (some not so good) - they're still not up to pub/import standards but, honestly, not that far off imo. they're definitely drinkable/enjoyable.
small breweries are putting out some respectable stuff too, but it's regional - there's some decent ones in the midwest, at least.
Back in my heavier drinking days (I have like a few beers over the course of a year now, lol), I became very partial to Bass Ale and Newcastle. The latter can hit you all the sudden... :o Also liked Boddington's on occasion. Guess I'm a limey bastard at heart.
hah, yeah - I used to drink Bass and Harp almost exclusively... but then they started making Harp in canada and it just kinda didn't taste right.
Bass is still a favorite though!
boddington's in the nitro can is pretty good... I was never much of a newcastle guy.
Guinness in the nitro can is good... but I really miss the old export IPA version... that was so kickass, like molasses and hops in a bottle. heh. don't see it very often anymore.
I still drink beer daily... but I've gone from the plural sense of beer to the "a beer" version... getting old ;)

Hehe... And yet my statement is still true for me - 'cause I've never tried Bud Light (I figured if the "regular" is that bad, then the Light version can only be worse! LOL!)
Funny, I've always like Budweiser, pleasant taste and 5% alchohol. I hardly drink at all these days, so to be honest anything tastes good when I occasionally have it. I used to drink "Owd Roger" years back....11% proof beer. 3 pints of that and you are guaranteed to fall over. A very smooth ale and you really have no idea that when you are sitting on the bar stool putting away three of them that as soon as you get off the bar stool you fall over....used to happen every time ;D ....sadly, diabetes put a stop to all that for me :-(
KrankZilla — Jun 12, 2011 Guess I'm a limey bastard at heart.
With a name like Evans you are probably a welsh bastard at heart :)
What do you expect from a bud? It's just a cheap mass purchased beer. It serves it's purpose.
If I go out on my boat, for example, and drink lots of beer, I prefer a Bud, Coors light, Miller light type of beer. I couldn't drink Newcastle all day in the hot sun.
Jon — Jun 11, 2011Just had a nice big bottle of Bud, and damn I'm feeling good ;D
I worked at the Anheuser Busch plant in Jacksonville Florida several times as a union tile setter, best job I ever had in construction. Easy days, easy job, just plain easy and no stress..... I don't like drinking alcoholic beverages but I sure liked getting paid at a brewery for not too much effort........
Hook, I figured you for a Fosters man.

The West Coast has plenty of fantastic beer, gotta disagree with you there. Oregon, Washington, and California are all over it and have been for many years now.
As I said
West coast micro breweries are ok - if a liitle flavoured.
I used to like some of the Redhook beers and i forgot Sam Adams, which is decent as well - for a beer you can get all over.
Though I wasn't a fan of the "fruity" flavoured beers that seemed to be big thing for the Seattle micros in the mid/late 90s.
I quit drinking in '94... resumed in 2002.
when I quit, I would have agreed with your sentiment 100%.
the US beer situation has improved pretty dramatically.
if your recollection is mid-90s vintage, I'd totally agree.
West Coast memories are from 96-97
NY memories are from 1999 - 2001.
I expect things will have changed.
My bugbear is not that I couldn't get hold of decent beer - that's easy - the supermarkets have massive ranges and exotic stuff I hadn't seen before - even new stuff from the UK.
That's mostly West Coast memory - my NY memories don't include trips to supermarkets - I have no clue how people actually shop in midtown NY where I stayed mostly. ;)
It's tap beer in a typical US boozer - it's crap.
In NY the Irish pubs were good on Guiness.
You go to a micro brewery pub on the west coast - it's great as well - but that is like going to a real ale convention to get a decent pint.
it's not the norm.
The norm was HookBender fare ;D
that may have changed and great if it has.
I am not blowing up the UK on this - they have had a monopoly crap beer moments in the past.
On beer - I advise anyone who can get hold of it to buy German beer from the Augustina brewery.
They probably have loads of varieties, I have no idea of that or if it travels well (i.e. never see it here).
But every beer I have tasted from them in Germany has been great.
and bottles drunk over here from German connections - the same - they in fact convinced me more - memories from trips can be coloured by occasion.
Drinking a bottle at home and thinking the same thing is a different matter !
It's tap beer in a typical US boozer - it's crap.
I haven't been in a bar since 1994 but I'd wager this remains true. the culture here doesn't support enjoyment of alcoholic beverages. you're only supposed to drink them to get drunk, not enjoy it. heh, it's a strange puritanical dissonance.
DreamTheaterRules — Jun 14, 2011Hook, I figured you for a Fosters man.
I like Fosters. My drinking beer, is coors light. If I plan to drink 1 to 3 or so beer, I try a variety of stuff. I like Yuengling, I know I destroyed the spelling there, mainly the black and tan. I also like Newcastle lately. Another beer I've enjoyed plenty of is Land Shark. Great for after cutting grass or a hot summer afternoon. I've got about 10 different beer in my fridge right now. 2 or 3 of each. My wife bitches about it all the time. ;D
however, all the pontificating about different beers aside, I still like Budwiser, I just like the taste. Not a crime is it ? ;D
Nope, sure isn't. It's what your use too.
All this hype about these great beers from Germany, to me, is just that. Some are ok tasting. If you started out drinking that kind of beer, you'd probably like it better than Bud. But your taste are accustomed to to American like beer. I remember when I started drinking beer....I wondered how the hell someone could like the shit. Now, I love it. It's an acquired taste you learn yourself to like. ;D Just like smoking cigs, cigars, etc. I don't smoke, but I can't see how a mouth full of smoke could ever be considered good in any respect. ;D
Fingers....ever heard the saying, "eat shit and bark at the moon"? ;D Reminds me of my now favorite saying I borrowed from you. ;D I wonder if you ate shit enough if you could acquire a taste for it? :D
Ahhh shit....I must quit drinking someday. ;D ;D
Now you may continue with your sane post and comments.
We have more microbrews around Portland than France has wines.
Some are VERY good. My favorites are Rogue's Younger's Special Bitter (named for the owner of the bar I played darts out of - who died about two months ago), Drop Top, Mirror Pond, then a bunch of close "runners up."
I should note that I rarely drink now (supporting my business partner's forced sobriety), but when I do I prefer Dos XX will only have one GOOD beer. :)

No - but it sounds like the sort of saying that someone who has a "drinking beer" would say.
Lastly the standard Bud over here is different to the Bud in the US, for one it is stronger.
It still sucks - but not as much as the stuff you love sucks. :)
This is stupid, whether a beer is good or not is purely subjective. If you like it "great", if you don't "also great". It's turning into one of those snobbish wine tasting affairs where it's only good if it's pricey....personally I totally dislike wine completely, foul tasting shit all of it !
at least no one has come out with a digital beer.
then we'd really have arguments! ;)
digital beer :-) Lol.
Actually, some of my happiest beer related memories are sitting in the evening sun in Philippines drinking san miquel by the gallon....lovely stuff !

Bud is the beer equivalent of having a Big Mac in a good steak house.
Bud on tap in the US is fucking piss.
subjectively some people may like drinking piss.
it is still piss though.

Which IS my point entirely. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, but yours in no more correct than mine or anyone elses.
And who the fuck has ever said differently ?
It doesn't need you pointing that out as it is obvious.
The irony is that you are the one assuming that your opinion is the correct one here.
there's no argument you declare, This is a snob debate.
Who are you a moderator!
That's only your opinion - not a fact
I disagree with you - so tough shit.
now do you get that?
::) oh man, get over yourself.
i got out of this game before the explosion of micro's and smaller regional beers. I liked Coors light for a light beer (after ball, etc). I liked Becks, Molson Golden, Moosehead, Heinekin, and some others for "weekend beer." Never did like Bud or Miller, or either one of their lite beers.
That's what my a$$hole says. ;D ;D

No, I have never been to Germany, nor do I desire to go. I have never been to the little different beer shops either. But for your limited information, they do sell German beer in the US and I've tried 3 or 4 different beer. Imagine that, they sell German beer in the US. Who would have thunk it?
The stuff I love???? I didn't say what my favorite beer was and didn't say I loved any beer. I like many different beer and drink different ones almost, at least, monthly. But, the beer I "love", would be the one in my hand currently. May change when I finish it though. I think I want a Blue Moon next. ;) My love changes from beer to beer sometimes. :D That was my point. I like to try different beer pretty regularly.
But they don't sell the really good German beers in the U.S.
However, while we're all arguing ( :D ) what about Mexican beers??? Corona, Dos XX, Husongs, Chiuaua, Casa Blanca? Totally different ballgame. (Notice I don't really make any point here - that's an important part of any good drunken argument. ;) ) ;D
The beer someone prefers is a subjective subject to begin with. No beer is piss or even close to it. Bud isn't as successful as it is because it's piss. Americans like it. It sells. So to A. Bush company, it's golden piss....got it?
Fingers....I think you need a beer, the one you love, of course. :D

You have never been to Germany - ok - they sell this in Munich at the same price as Bud

I have lived and worked in the US.
And no they don't sell German beer - they don't even sell it here.
As for Bud - i have said several times already - the Bud they sell here is better than the stuff the sell in the US.
But Shit man - if you like Bud - buy a fucking czech Budvar at the same price in the UK.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budweiser_Budvar_Brewery
But the killer is Bud on tap in the US - man that is #1 as the worst beer I have ever tasted anywhere in the world.
Hookbender is probably filling up his empties on his boat and sticking them em in the chiller - as he likes the taste :)
And you can be sure that the Bud you are drinking has never travelled anywhere in the world successfully.
The only market for that "American" beer is in the US.
American beer generally has had little impact world wide - it is all marketing and has no substance.
Augustiner is interesting - their beer is something else and would take over the market on a single taste test.
Yet you have piss water with marketing departments dominating the US.
It fails outside of the US - product is crap in comparison - aside from the Americana marketing angle - stick on your base ball cap, drink bud and maybe you are in the US for the night.
Augustiner is just fantastic - not good or ok - fantastic
Hookbender — Jun 15, 2011I like Yuengling, I know I destroyed the spelling there, mainly the black and tan.
No, dude, you spelled it right! Nice work! And the Lager and the Black and Tan are my favorite American beers. Especially back up in Pennsylvania...it's just better there. Still good down south, though...
Budweiser is dogshit unless you live in the town where they brew it. When I was in Jacksonville (funny that DBM mentioned that), the Budweiser was actually quite tolerable, and I HATE Budweiser.
I've grown to enjoy Shiner Bock here in Texas and the darker and more tasty Ziegen Bock (which I think is available only here). I can't get Yuengling anymore...they only sell it in certain areas of the east coast of the USA.
I think beer is such a personal thing, though...

Here's you a small list of German beer sold in the US. I've had 3 on this list. Read a book you ignorant cunt. When you finish that book, eat shit and bark at the moon. :D You could drink a blue moon beer while barking loudly. ;D

Yeah, the black and tan has been one of my go to beer lately. For some reason, I've started really enjoying dark beer in the last year or so. Probably because I don't kick back 12 beer at a time anymore. I'm actually enjoying the beer more 3 or 4 per sitting.
I agree, you can put the most expensive, best, ingredients found on earth into making a particular beer and if no one buys it....gonna be hard to argue it's the best beer you can buy...
....meanwhile, I've just had another bud, and it's funny, it still takes good. ;D
you've just had a Bud at 7 am -was that with your breakfast. :)
Hookbender - you will not see any of those beers being sold in Germany.
3 and 4% beers - sounds like brewed especially for you as a drinking beer :)
next you will be telling me about German food as you ain't too fond of the frankfurters in the hotdog you like with your drinking beer.
I always preferred coke (not the soft drink) and MJ to all alcoholic beverages.
I want my medical MJ card. I wish they would hurry up the process here in Arizona. Times a wasting.........
