maybeshewill is just a good band name, too. There was a band I caught once in a club called "chixdiggit"--I still envy them their name.
Charger, wasn't being a dick about it at all. I was just trying to explain the difference between when you need to say more in a thread like this, and when you don't. IMO of course. Fact is, I've sang his praises here for YEARS but that doesn't mean anyone has ever actually listened to him. ;D However, he's in the mags too much to not know who he was, so obviously I didn't understand why you were asking. Now I do.
Ok, heading home. Big football game tonight. Then I'll start checking out some more of you guys listens later tonight.
p.s. So far, so good. This thread is moving fast and has people posting AND the real benefit if it keeps going, we all discover some new things that we like.
ironsheep — Dec 05, 2013I listened to Comus, First Utterance this morning.
well, since it's my wake up CD, I listen to it every morning... but still, I'll mention it once for participation's sake. ;)
Did you know that's the CD where Opeth got the name for their My Arms, Your Hearse album? (Coincidentally, the first album I got from them upon IEG's recommendation.)
Yeah, you probably did know that. ;)
yep, and the "baying of the hounds" on Diana showed up in Ghost Reveries... and I swear I hear the same melodies somewhere in Storm Corrosion (I don't really know the track names... just listen to that one as an event) as the vocal cries(?) after the solo guitar section in The Herald!
DreamTheaterRules — Dec 05, 2013 Big football game tonight.
Oh yeah, Houston and Jacksonville! ;D

You just keep piling it on, don't you? Jeesh. Woe to the person who "pretends" to be a guitar player who doesn't know all the music you know...
Of course, I'm not "of your age" either.
Lighten up man. The only guitar player here that you have ever heard me put down is myself. ;). I meant more in the " you can't read ANY guitar mag for long without hearing about Holdsworth." I was not referring in any fashion to anyones ability as a guitar player. Sorry if my sarcasm offended anyone. It. Was not intended that way.
Ok, so maybe we should take a poll and see how many of us read guitar magazines.
You do, I don't.
Who's next? :)
Still listening to Maybeshewill. They remind me almost of a modern version of Phillip Glass with their build-ups, changes and arpeggios. Still liking it, but I can tell it could become too much of the same thing after awhile. We'll see! :)
I have read Guitar Player since 1977. I used to read Guitar World and others but now only subscribe to Guitar Player. However, I get TONS of online magazines that I check out including iGuitar, Guitar World, and others. When I look back over the years, I can't imagine things without them. I'm really busy now, but a quick off the top of my head idea. Without Guitar Player and other mags, I "probably" never would have even heard of Steve Morse, Alan Holdsworth, Al Di Meola, Yngvie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and on and on and on. Oh, and Dream Theater!
One of the things I hoped to get from this thread is WHERE you guys get your new stuff. Where you hear about bands that aren't on the radio. Where you hear about guitar players, etc. I don't have time to wade through You Tube Videos like sheep was mentioning, just to HOPE to find something good. I simply don't have time to do that. I used to check out Prog Palace Radio and founds some good stuff there. Other than that, the mags and mentions at TGP are my main source of NEW stuff.
p.s. Interesting (to me only probably) note about Guitar Player. I picked up my very first copy of guitar player magazine at age 16. The cover was Frank Zappa with the strat that Jimi burned on stage. I bought that off the news stand. I probably read it cover to cover 10 times and thought it was about the coolest thing ever. I immediately subscribed, and have ever since.
And, I still have that magazine. 8-)
(another side note: The ads back then were LOADED with hot, scantily clad women. That and tons of guitars and amps..... just what every 16 year old pretend guitar player needs! ;D )
Well, the point was, not all of us read guitar mags. There are many ways to learn about good music you've never heard of. Here's a few:
- Forums and threads like this (another forum I'm in has had a few good topics over the last few months)
- Focused websites like Prog Archives, Metal Archives, Ektoplasm, New Wave Outpost and Jazz Music Archives (to name just a few)
- Suggestions from music streaming websites
Actually, I'm willing to bet that guitar magazines are probably one of the worst places since you're normally only going to hear about a few of the most "popular at the moment" artists.

Getting ready for a closing so shutting down the tunes for a while. So far today....
Damn Yankees and Narnia (Christian Yngwie type stuff) I know you've all heard of Damn Yankees. I'll can find links if anyone is interested in some Christian shredding. (they do nail it, Yngwie tone and all).
DreamTheaterRules — Dec 06, 2013 if anyone is interested in some Christian shredding.
There used to be these Cats that did that in the Colosseums in the past. I didn't know that anyone was still into that kind of thing.
just want to mention this, regarding my wading habits... but first a proviso: I'm not defensive about any of this so don't think its "aimed" at anything... just throwing some context on the pyre.
I spend almost all of my music time playing the guitar or mixing/arranging - the hour or so I put into other people's music 3 or 4 nights a week has to be interesting and different. I don't want to listen to the same kind of stuff I'm doing...
I have logged so many hours listening to van halen, led zeppelin, hendrix, srv, santana, henderson, gordon lightfoot, beatles, doors, miles, boston, rubinstein playing chopin and mozart, dimeola, ozzy, floyd, timmons, muse, plankton, opeth, stones, nevermore, ELO and on and on (apologies to widely known artists that didn't come to mind - there are some others) - I know that music just by thinking about it. I don't really need to hear it again. comus is getting to that saturation point. point being, if an artist or band puts out music that really gets me, I listen it INTO THE F'N GROUND. heh.
ok, so, that's why I wade around the darker corners of YouTube. I want things that are weird and unfamiliar because I know my music library far too well.
to remind and wrap up... I'm not saying this defensively and was not the least perturbed by anything I read here... so I'm issuing a preemptive chill on all that sensitive crap! ;) :D
to the thread topic, today I'm listening to a demo of ironsheep's Barbed Wire Sandwiches. it's 39 minutes! this last few months of stuff is surprisingly unshitty when put together in a playlist.
(I don't read any magazines)

LOL!!
LOL, I didn't mean anything offensive by "I don't have time to wade around looking." Was just stating that what time I spend looking needs to be focused toward things I already have SOME reason to believe I will like. And that info was thrown out as part of the purpose of this thread... to help me see where and how you guys find new stuff, so that I can find some new stuff. So, this is ALL good info! Accept of course, for the part where I said "pretend to be guitar players" which of course was offensive to everyone not appreciating my sarcasm! LOL
So, joking aside, explanation of how and why is part of the reason I started this thread. And sheep, without claiming to know your exact life situation, again, this is all relative, and good info for us all. I work in an office all day and can play music some of the time, go home where I have a wife so again I don't just walk in and turn on the stereo, and I get to play guitar MOST days now but sometimes for no more than 15 minutes due to other obligations. I'm "guessing" you have more free time than I do (LUCKY DOG!).
So, when I started this thread, it was meant to be more than "what are you listening too right this second?" The dual purpose was hoping that we'd all find some new stuff here that we'd like due to the posts of others. That's why I requested some comments, reviews, opinions or otherwise. So, when Charger said "why would I bother putting on something I didn't like" that would also apply to me, but only IF I'm listening to my own music collection. If I'm wondering around you tube or music sites demo'ing new stuff.... then you would expect to find things you do and don't like, and sharing your opinion on those might influence others seeking them out. Also. within my own stash, if I do wander into something you guys may not be familiar with, I will elaborate some so you know what it is, such as I did with Narnia above.
Deano, Here's the vid. You can watch right up to the end before the head get's chopped off. :)

Here's another way Howie. Though YMMV really can apply as you get farther away from the middle.
http://www.music-map.com/After you enter an artist you get presented with results that kind of move into place. Where things end up are completely due to all of the input that people have given in terms of who sounds close to who else.
In any event, I've definitely discovered some new artists using this.
For example, using Dream Theater:
http://www.music-map.com/dream+theater.html
That Narnia song kicks ass. I wonder if I were to play it in one ear while listening to black metal in the other if they cancel each other out? :D

I've ordered my life to suit me... and so have you! I'd say we're both pretty lucky.
PS: I have no spare time, only free time. ;)
Here's one you may not have heard of. Big from 1969 to 1972, but also has stuff as new as 2004.
Black Widow - IV
Craig, just reminded me! One way I discovered new bands (but I haven't done this for a few weeks) is to use iHeart radio and create a "station." You put in a bands name and it will pick other bands that it deems similar, and will play them along with the band you selected. Found some neat stuff that way!
Did you really like the Narnia or just something to crack a joke on? :) I figure most guys here wouldn't make it past the first two verses and chorus to the guitar solos due to content. ;D ;D
DreamTheaterRules — Dec 06, 2013 I figure most guys here wouldn't make it past the first two verses and chorus to the guitar solos due to content. ;D ;D
That'd be me. I already have the bible on tape.
I sure was hoping that lion would do something other than stand there, like eat the vocalist.
Oh and by the way, I'm from the South. I have definitely heard of them "Damn Yankees".
tonight, listening to Sasquatch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZP9ZQlhL5g
"stoner metal"? it's a big fat hairy fuzz sound... well, that makes sense for a sasquatch! nothing amazing here but it's got some groove... leads are kinda meh. soundgarden-ish grind but with massive fuzz. not too bad.
started in on some explosions in the sky... but I liked what I heard too much to spend the 5-10 mins i've got till I go to bed. so... tomorrow!
explosions in the sky... well, awesome. listened to The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place... reminded me of listening to radiohead or pink floyd for the first time - not that they're like either, but a similar experience as a listener. now on to the rest of their stuff... but first...
Narnia... impressive skills but I never really liked that style so much. the overt lyrics... meh, whatever, I never really listen to lyrics from a content standpoint - his voice suits the music. C.S. Lewis would probably not have liked that song... ;D
I was doing some surfing last night and started listening to Sasquatch. After awhile it had quit and I had listened to the whole thing. I liked that. It had some very heavy, almost revolting tones, but good jam.
I started yesterday watching the P-Funk. My wife came in and then WE were watching the P-Funk. LOL. FingerJimmy had slid me some Parliament back at the Hole. I listened to some of the Maybeshewill and Album Leaf. My day was kind of scattered yesterday afternoon. I liked what I heard.
I go back thru this thread and try to hear at least a little of whatever you guys post, so I appreciate it. My listening had become stagnant so this thread has been good in that respect.
I watched that Kaare Norge Classical guitar. That guy is just stupid good. (one of those burn all your shit kind of moments)
The other day I started listeneing to the Clash London Calling from one of Craig's offhand comments. I wound up listening to a Cult album that I had missed from 2007 Born Into This. I like it, recommend it, if you like the rock and roll thing.

Hey! That wasn't offhand, that was meant to be accurate! (And I still think it was. ;) )
Well, I spent several hours last night... Listening to all the damn suggestions others had posted! LOL.
I also listened to Hallucinogen's Twisted which, I'm sure, won't be most of your cups of tea (but has songs on it that defined the Goa Trance genre - especially the first song).
Oh yeah, and the required link is:
RIGHT HERE! Hallucinogen - Twisted :)

I meant that it wasn't a listening suggestion, but a comparison to the Hellpops, so offhand but accurate.
I just came out of my goa trance. Is that Dr. Phil at the start of that?? There are some cool things going on in that. I like how some of the stuff moves back and forth. I gave up though about 20 Minutes in. Having no drugs to keep me latched to that B.....B....B.....B.....B.....Beat. ;D ;D

OMG, completely made me spit coffee all over my laptop.... awesome.
I don't read guitar mags, but when I do, they are online, and they are called discussion boards. I used to use napster to find similar music to what I liked... but that's long gone... then it was pandora, but pandora tends to turn up "popular" music as opposed to "diverse" music. Lately, youtube's been doing a pretty good job of suggesting similar music, which is cool, though I'm still looking for the autosuggest engine that can give me stuff that I will like, but that is one or two degrees of separation away from the stuff I like.
There's a point in the first song on The Earth is not a Cold, Deap Place, where the drummer does some ridiculously tasty accent beat... that was where I knew I was going to love that band. It's pretty rare for something to come along and really grab me. Funny, sheep, because to me that album is like listening to OK Computer or Siamesse Dream for the first time. It's kind of like when you think, "I didn't know people could do this..."
I'm going to be going back and doing some listening to some suggestions from here today, probably not much new from me.
I went Kind of Retro for today so far:
I started with Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RgUK8ug3Ys
Then Otis Redding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynqOJRQL9Xo
Jethro Tull - Aqualung http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUEA5NWlQU0
Hot Tuna - Burgers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NKVf27mvLQ
Then a Bunch of Sheepclips. :D
Well, iTunes has COMPLETELY screwed up my music folder so I will probably spend all evening fixing that tonight. I added my "MP3" folder to itunes sync and chose to add a bunch of music to my iPad. It asked me if I wanted to "organize" my music folder for itunes, which included making a folder for each artist, and a folder inside that folder for each album. Now instead of one huge MP3 folder on my laptop, I have HUNDREDS of sub folders in that file. Here's the kicker. EACH folder has only song 1 from that album. And then below the folder list are all the other song (still in the c:MP3 folder) but ONLY songs 2-whatever..... Song one of each of my nearly 1000 albums, is in a folder, songs 2 thru last song AREN'T. Unless there is some work-around, it would take MONTHS to move all the "track #1's" and delete all these sub folders.
Just for the record, things like this are why I never used itunes. I remember spending several evenings making a nice music folder for Daphne when I bought her new laptop a few years back. For Christmas, she wanted an iPod. After she installed itunes, it completely took over the music/folder setup and the last time I looked at it, she had over 300 sub folders. BOOO!
Oh, so the gist of it is, I won't be listening to music at work today because of my screwed up folder system. >:( >:( >:(
Ok, let me update that. Sitting here while eating, I remembered that after seeing the "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and seeing that it was checked while I was getting the files over to the iPad, I unchecked it. Apparently it moved Track 1 of every single album into it's folder and left the rest out. I just went to preferences, advanced and checked it. Now every song is in an individual folder. So, I have TONS of un-needed, unwanted folders, but it looks like it works. Now I'll debate whether to try to undo all this and make it all in one big folder again, which is vastly preferable. And thank God I noticed before doing it the first time, and unchecked the "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to liabrary" button. I did that when I first imported the Bible MP3's on my ipad and it duplicated the files to the new folder. Duplicating my MP3 file to the iTunes media file would have filled my hard drive completely before it even finished. Not sure why Apple would assume I want all my MP3s complied completely in two folders at the same time.
Howie, I here ya. I hate that when installing a program, most any these days, you have to really pay attention to what it's installing. I usually try to do a custom install, and be sure to uncheck any crap browser add-ons or program features that are more annoying than helpful.
It's a shame that you have to watch where you put your "click". ;D ;D
Emerson Lake and Palmer- Brain Salad Surgery. Classic. Epic. You already know this.
I dumped iTunes for Media Monkey a long time ago. WAY better for large collections. :)
Savoy Brown - Street Corner Talking. British blues / rock from 1971. Their first album after Lonesome Dave and a couple others left to form Foghat. I love the old school production that allows you to really hear everything in the mix.
Some Robben Ford. Blue Moon and Robben Ford & the Blue Line. Dumble tone.
Then some heavier stuff:
Seether - Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray. Some good music but nothing too exciting.
A few random Ryashon songs. They did a metal version of Chocolate Rain that was funny but cool so I dug around and found more of their stuff. Some of it reminds me of Some Mexican. Mostly instrumental and creative. Between Shores - I like the 'squishy' rhythm parts in the chorus -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKj2oznFSRc
highlights from tonight:
The Real Group... I can't believe the bass on the one guy... sheesh, they sound so good it's almost suspicious! heh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDsjZXrYIZk
Charles Mingus, Moanin'... that baritone riff (you'll know the one I mean)... lol, that's awesome! I love this all the way around. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__OSyznVDOY
Monophonics - pretty cool retro sound, nice grooves, I like it. grooving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tde_MWUiK4o this one is kinda unusual: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nAtgXhD6Hs other track links are worth checking out too.
Tobe, i had a Savoy Brown album in my teens. Can't even remember the name, but sure enjoyed it at the time. I need some Robin Ford. Have heard very little, and indeed loved the tones on what i heard.
Really ironic to read that tonight because my whole playing time tonight was devoted to Dumble tones. I have debated selling my Jetter Red Shift. Tonight i played it, then tried to dial the Timmy and Gain Changer to sound like it. Timmy can get pretty close. gain Changer can almost nail it. Very close! Just hate to sell it because that is a "special" tone.
I can't really reccomend one Robben Ford album as definitive. I like several songs on each album I have but some of them are kinda cheesy in regards to lyrics. Cool.tones and not too repetitive on licks. When I saw Sonny Landreth he had a Dumble and I lmmediately wanted one... until I saw what they go for.
All of last night and this morning: Moody Blues (git yer own links for these ;) ).
Tobe, the tones are to die for. A definite "thing" and one I wouldn't use all the time but oh boy is it great. Jetter Red Shift is pretty good at it. Wish it were just more juicy like the real thing. Some of the tones I've heard from Dumble users were just epic glorious juicy tones.
Today: Trying some Porcupine Tree on iHeart radio. So far... Not bad. Song called "Shallow" playing now.
Interesting... heard a Liquid Tension Experiment song while listening to the Porcupine Tree "channel". BONUS!
Then heard an Opeth song. Funny, I thought they were heavier. The song I heard wasn't even hard rock. I must have had them confused with another band, or else this was one of their mellower tunes.
LOL, ok song # 2 from Opeth just came on. THERE'S THE COOKIE MONSTER! Heir Apparent....
embrace the cookie... opeth is worth it.
Stoner rock all day day for me...
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E1Ji0Xs56A
Kyuss - Sky Valley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBAjybFwgOA
Pentagram - First Daze Here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwjNY2WGUjw
Sleep - Dopesmoker (entire album is actually only one song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIw7oeZKpZc
Wow, Dopesmoker is NOT meant for those who are not under the influence - heh. :D
ironsheep — Dec 10, 2013embrace the cookie... opeth is worth it.
That made me laugh. ;D (Little Opeth crumbs everywhere.)
