I had been listening to Black Country Communion, various tracks, until I got Glenn Hughes'd out. Kind of a spinoff from the Joe B suggestion of D:TGP, and he was the the Iced Earth suggestion culprit, instigator. :D I'll check out some of the new stuff, when I'm OverFloyd.

That Adrian Belew was interesting. I had heard of him, but never really listened. I Had listened to King Crimson, but early stuff, Pre-AB. I think in the 80's they had something that charted so I probably heard some of that. Fit well after the Pink Floyd. I thought it had a Talking Heads Vibe. I saw where he did session stuff with them.
I did try to listen to some Plankton. Not much available on the YT, just a few tracks. I listened to some of the Tremonti the other night but the Stream petered out on me. I'll have to pick that back up. Did sound good.
I need some linkage to some decent Opeth. iHeart radio wants to play a bunch of other "similar" bands and hardly any Opeth. I'm trying, but I can't embrace the cookie! :)

Interesting You Tube comments on this one. I'm 10 minutes in and it's MELLOW. The comments range from multiple remarks about them being Death Metal, to multiple comments about this being laid back music. I'm confused. LOL Actually, the other day when I made an iHeart Opeth station, the first two songs it played by them were laid back like this is. NOT AT ALL what I was expecting... In fact, only heard one some by them that wasn't pretty mellow.
the next thing to listen to is Blackwater Park. there's some cookie but not everywhere... the previous album was your gateway to opeth - now you have to confront the cookie! heh, seriously, the tunes are worth it - embrace the cookie!! ;) ;D
there are some cookie-free tunes... but ignore that anyway... the riffs are awesome!

Drop the iHeart Radio stuff... that's just a ClearChannel front anyway. YouTube is kind of amazing in its ability to provide full albums at all times of anything.
I like the Opeth generally (although their name always makes me want to speak in King James English... "and verily, we opeth forsooth" or something)... I am not a fan of that drum sound though. I realize it's omnipresent if you listen to modern heavy stuff... but it just makes me nostalgic for drum sounds that include midrange.
There was a link on the youtube page to the Sepultura album, Roots, which is to me, glorious tonal perfection... a sort of flawless masterpiece from the Brazilians, who aren't technically flawless players but just bleed the music from their souls. It's raw, political, angry, and embodies that sort of punk ethic that I love, when people actually care enough about something to scream it at you. I love their loose, filthy guitar sounds, and the drum sounds are so warm and thick and alive... drummer Igor Cavalera is in my top ten of drummers all time, he's not a technical wunderkind but he's got every riff integrated into his being, kind of from the Dave Lombardo school of "groove over technicality." I'm not sure if it technically qualifies as "cookie" if the singer is a Brazilian native Portuguese speaker who's putting his heavily accented English out there with all of his tortured soul... but the vocals are what they are. You cannot beat the grooves and churn of this album... it reminds me of what it was probably like to listen to Sabbath when it was new.

And speaking of warm heavy drumming, and Dave Lombardo, fuck it, let's just take Slayer's South of Heaven for a spin, because if you haven't listened to it in a while, it's still amazing. Yeah, you might be a purist and call me out (it's slower and less fierce than Reign in Blood, they didn't play any guitar solos in key until Seasons in the Abyss) but, fuck it, it's Slayer, it's essence of Slayer. When I hear this, I remember that Rick Rubin used to know how to record and mix drums without pushing the treble way the fuck over the top and making me want to wear ear protection. It's slower Slayer, which is kind of like faster, heavier Sabbath. But Slayer knows one thing that many "metal" bands don't, and that is groove. Observe: the breakdown groove in Ghosts of War (starting at around 21:00, at 22:20 they take the heaviness to a new level as if to say, "don't you wish you could do this shit?"), to me, along with the ending of Raining Blood are two of the greatest grooves ever in metal...

A little long-winded... also of note, the engineer for both Roots and South of Heaven is Andy Wallace, he also mixed South of Heaven. I love his drum sounds...
I'm at my other branch office today and this PC has no sound card so no music today at work. I made it about 25 minutes into the mellow Opeth album yesterday. Probably finish it tomorrow early then check the other one, then the Slayer.

*can't deal with a mental pummeling like this more than, say, once a week! heh.

Starting to see that. At first I thought it was cool but it sort of depends on what you put in. I do use it to listen to local radio stations sometimes though, when I have no radio in the office.
So as of now, finishing up the mellower Opeth. So far, no cookie, but no jamming either.
Round one of Opeth complete. I'm wondering just how far off I was about that band. That album didn't even have a CCR or Eagles level of hardness. LOL. Ok, on to the next one.
Checking out the Slayer today. Don't know why, but I don't have any in my collection. I will soon.
Took a break and listened to podcasts for a few days.
Dean's thread on UFO inspired me to listen to Lights Out. That album pushed me to start trying to figure out licks by ear. Schenker signature melodic leads.
Another one I liked from Don Kirshner's rock concerts was Joe Walsh. You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind may have been audio from that show. Wore out a coupleof copies on 8 track which was usually accomplished in 10 plays or less.... Got it on my J3 for this afternoon. That and Animals.

Every time I listen to Roots I'm completely blown away by how heavy it is. It's not like they're using the Dual Rectifier/scooped metal sound, either, in fact I think they used Big Muffs through Marshalls on this. It's the groove that makes it heavy, their choice of accents, the way they put the riffs together. They are the only band that makes me wish I was born in Brazil.
I've seen a few things from Brazil that made me wish I was born there, but they weren't bands. ;)
Ok, so I am trying to listen to this second Opeth in my office. While I can get away with more ripping music, I had to turn it down because the first (at least) 7-8 minutes were cookie. :)

I did finish the second Opeth. I liked a lot of what I heard, enough to try to figure a way to get it on MP3 and check out in the car at "appropriate" volume level. ;) I've said this before. I'm all about the music. I'll put up with some cookie if the music is good enough.
Revalation: Reading back through part of this at lunch yesterday, saw Deano's comment about King Crimson. I have 5-6 KC albums (the real, vinyl things) but haven't "heard" them for years... because I have no CDs or MP3s. Had some cool stuff I really enjoyed. Since some here have been cool to (cough) share their MP3s with others, I'm just wondering.... LOL
And, now on the Slayer. Digging some of the groves. Not so much digging the vocals. The one frat house used to play stuff like this at their parties when I was in school. Drunken head banging is a time honored tradition in college. ;D
Sepultura to me is unclassifiable. It's like mixing Metallica with SOD during Carnaval, in the middle of the Amazon, the neighboring tribes pray for rain and deliverance from evil. I like the Rage Against the Machine analogy because they are politically the equivalent, screaming at the top of their lungs at the Brazilian government, multinational corporations, and the culture of native oppression... except they grew up speaking Portuguese, so they can't pull off the level of linguistic heroics of a Zack Delarocha, and when they scream, it's not razor sharp, but guttural and choked.
Tripped around the youtube dial today for a while. Then settled on Metallica's new one, Death Magnetic. I'm not sure how to feel about it... the sound is better than the awful crushed master on St. Anger, though it's still pretty crushed... and the music is much more of a return to the Metallica I love of Lightning/Master/Justice. But the songs seem to have no reason for being... no, for lack of a better word, soul... It all sounded good and I liked the playing and arrangements... but nothing grabbed me. Oh well...

I had never really listened to Malmsteen. Just never hit the radar. I dig this vocalist, from a Schenker album, so I decide to find out where he's been, 1983 Alcatrazz. Graham Bonnet. Something about his vocals I like. Can't explain it. Range or something, cause there are places that are hurtful. ;D I also saw that Vai played on some later albums. Maybe later on for those.

Musta been 11 years old when I first heard them. I would stay up later than I should have listening to Beaker Street on a little am radio. Had no clue I was being exposed to the 'counterculture', I just liked hearing shit nobody else played.

Finished up the Sepultra. I agree for no classification. I had always thought they were just another metal band. Cool stuff. There was one place near the end there was this flute ( I assume) that sounded like an orgasmic woman, or rather I new this woman once that sounded like that flute. ;D I didn't care it was fake. :P
Listened to the Slayer. Caught Imogen Heap. I liked the Acid Mother's Temple. I couldn't make it through the Al Di & Paco. I think it depresses me. ;D I have one Nevermore CD. The Godless Endeavor. LOL. I liked the SIMO. watched a few. There was one riff that said Gary Moore: Blues for Greeny, So Now I'm on Peter Green from 1970. I think this was from an old vinyl and it skipped early but smooths out. Good stuff. VVVVVV :D
