Listening to Music
607 posts
I spent the better part of yesterday listening to some Early Lowell George.  If you're not familiar with him, he was the songwriter / guitarist for Little Feat before he died.  I listened the their first 4 or 5 albums.  they can be found of the youtube.  Here is one of their songs that I dig.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAtYCDKWrvA

I'll check out the other links and suggestions today.
Ok, so this morning I typed in "Opeth" on iHeart.  7 songs and an hour in, not one song it had played had been by Opeth, I skipped, skipped and skipped until I had reached my "skip limit" on iheart and still hadn't heard one Opeth song.  Iheart, shut down for the day.  Back to old faithful (C:\Music\MP3s )

Genius time....  Alan Holdsworth Atavacrhon.  Jazz Rock synthaxe fusion extraordinaire!

Here's one song for you...

CraigBert — Dec 10, 2013Wow, Dopesmoker is NOT meant for those who are not under the influence - heh.  :D

There's a reason they call it "stoner rock"--although I'm rarely stoned any more, I definitely got into this music heavily when I was.  I still love the churn of good stoner rock... it's all about deep groove and massive walls of thick guitar and rubbery bass...
You want to hear genius?   Here it is.  Thank me later.  The synthaxe stuff leading up to the solo is ultra awesome, but when he starts soloing.... mind blowing.  This whole solo is synthaxe.  Too bad they're $100K or so.  (used to be anyway)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMj8UUVqkNo
Sorry... I just can't get into that synthaxe.
Pick about any song of his, and even if you don't like it, it's worth listening to a 5 minute song just to hear the solo!

I think the synthaxe is incredible.  The chording he's doing with it kills me.  But that solo.....   legendary.
Ok, regular old guitar this time, no Synthaxe.  Two short blasts of absolute furry.  Check it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJeb6IEFamY

More genius.  Yes it's Synthaxe lead, but this is BLOWING!

Ok, to update:  Today I have listened to Atavachron, Metal Fatigue, Sand, Secrets and Wardenclyffe Tower.  These are my favorite Holdsworth albums and are absolutely essential listing for any guitar player.  I rarely listened to jazz before I discovered Holdsworth, and at first, I listened to stuff I didn't always love just to hear him play.  But this stuff is brilliant.  The playing is mind boggling.

Allan Holdsworth is like Jimi in that is is on another plain from all other guitar players.  The stuff he comes up with is simply incredible, and must be experienced by all guitar players and fans of brilliant guitar work.  I say all of you should listen to all 5 of these albums.  This isn't some band I like or something.  I'm telling you there is a reason why this guy is a legendary guitar hero.
I like his ability and skill better than his music :(

similar feelings about a lot of eric johnson's stuff - just awesome playing but the music is right out of an elevator.
Aw, hell.  I'm way behind.  Freakin' work. :P

I dig the hell out of that Kyuss.  Listened to the first link.  That's good stuff.  I think I had listened to them some before.  Maybe just a short bit, but it didn't grab me like this.

I can't wait to get to the synthaxe.  you guys have me anxious. LOL
Holdsworths playing is genius, Deano.  I think Sheep will come around when he listens to some more of it.  That's how it worked with me anyway.  At first I listened JUST for the guitar solos.  Then I started really digging the music.  I remember ready a quote about him in Guitar Player probably 30 years ago, saying that even if you didn't like jazz, it was worth buying a Jean Luc Ponty album just for the 2-3 Holdsworth solos on it.  I have 3-4 of his albums that I still play once a year or so because I think they are cool... and they have those killer Holdsworth solos on them!
Yeah, I've heard a lot of Holdsworth, I've even seen him live.  As a musician, I think he's an excellent technician, I don't get emotion from his playing but it's impressive.  Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, those are the guys that kill me.
Jean Luc Ponty.  Wasn't he on Star Trek.  The Next Generation.  (kidding)  I'll get to it.  I'm on Dopesmoker just now.  I listened to a short clip of Holdsworth the other day.  It loses me.  I'll give it a bigger whirl, but I might have to get off and take the stairs.

I have a few things to catch up on from the other page.  I liked the Mingus stuff, but a little of that goes a long way.  Same with the Real Group.  They sound great but one song will hold me off for a while.
DreamTheaterRules — Dec 11, 2013Two short blasts of absolute furry.

I love furry guitar.
Uh, that was supposed to be FURY!  ;D
Ok, just got back from meeting.  Nothing new here, but definitely classic stuff.  On the play list and playing now  Deep Purple Machine Head, followed by Who Do We Think We Are.  I know what I'm putting on to jam to when I get home tonight.  Haven't played this stuff in a while.  Classic killer stuff here!
The 'plexi' pedal thread put me in a mood for dimed NMV Marshall tone. So I'm cranking The Four Horsemen this afternoon. Raw.
Haven't had much new to add, but that's mostly the fault of others here!  :D

Over the last three days, I've been listening to some Iron Sheep long jams and the bands Charger posted earlier (lots of Kyuss and some Pentagram).

Well, there was a couple new Psytrance CD's too.  I get new album links emailed to me from Ektoplasm all the time (these are all legal and help the artists, who participate willingly, to get noticed, get feedback and to get word-of-mouth marketing for their work).  If you have ANY interest in trance or techno then you'll want to spend some time over on their website: http://www.ektoplazm.com/

I like Tobe's pick (The Four Horsemen) so maybe that will get some play later today.  :)

That's interesting....I thought I was the only one that felt like that about Eric Johnson.  His ability is top notch but his tunes are pretty much elevator music and don't really inspire at all.   I've always "wanted" to like his stuff because of his ability but just don't like it.
Big Storm kick today... I've always loved Storm Large... the first time I laid eyes on her she was standing in line in front of me at the Mill Valley Film Festival... it's hard not to notice a super-hot, 6' tall blond who just looks like she's famous... she was making all these hilarious crude jokes, and I was cracking up the entire time in line... then she introduced herself and handed me a ticket to her show at Sweetwater the next night... which killed it... I had really never seen anything quite like it... she killed it in so many ways.  Today I've been watching videos on youtube and what I love about her is the complete entertainment package... she sings like an angel, then like a demon, rocks hard, and the entire time her commentary is sharp and witty and enrapturing... anyway, you might like her or hate her, but I love this lady.

Didn't get to listen to much this week, but did get the following:

Led Zeppelin - Celebration Day.  This is a great performance, although Jimmy's sloppier than ever and his solos rarely make sense.  But the songs kick ass, and solos notwithstanding, everybody sounds great.  A bit bittersweet, the first time I listened to this i thought about how much great music we never got to hear after Bonzo passed.  :\

Tremonti - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEEIdcM5npg  A better, much heavier Creed without the annoying singer, or Alterbridge with not quite as good a singer.  Hell, I wish I could sing as good as Mark.  His lead playing has come a long ways, much smoother, unforced, and just better.  Decent album if you like this kind of stuff.  Some really crushing riffs.

I don't have anything from her, but I hear about her from time to time.  She's a local girl up here in Portland.  Definitely doesn't look mid-40's and actually reminds me a bit of Blondie in her singing prime (as opposed to her Playboy prime  ;) ).
Tremonti is some good stuff.  I wonder when he'll have a second album out?
I saw the better part of that Zep show the other week on AXS TV.  It was a good watch.  Looked like they had fun.

That chick can definitely sing, Charger.  I checked out all of those links.  Easy on the eyes, too.

Listened to most every thing you guys have posted over the last few days.  Opeth - My arms Your Hearse, today.  Some synthaxe.  I could probably enjoy Holdworth more on a long drive.  It's pretty intense.  Watched the Four Horsemen wrestle. LOL  Only the song from Metallica.  LOL  I did check out a little Savoy Brown and Robbin Ford the other day.  I had listened to a bunch of Kim Simmonds in the past.  I have a more recent CD of his from about 8 or 10 years ago.

Good stuff.  No time for anything new on my part. LOL
Storm Large was pretty cool -- really good singing, even better performer. (satan is working in finance now... lol)

the zep reunion stuff just depresses me... jimmy... ugh. oh well, he's still the man. plant sounds great and jpj is like, what, going to live forever? he looks my age! fy jpj!! ;)  ;D

starting tremonti now - digging this!

*tremonti update: wow, this is pretty damn good - I guess I forgot about this guy as "that creed dude"... oops.

yeah, exactly -- high landrons and stuff with a hendrix influence I really like a lot... but when he's doing that dainty shimmering stuff and kyoto picking or whatever... he just loses me. I think it sounds wonderful and it's super impressive that he can play that way (light touch, incredible timing) but... ugh, I can't listen to it for very long. small doses and it impresses the heck out of me, though.

tremonti... over. good stuff, enjoyed most of it -- the ballady one didn't do much for me... I'm kinda sick of the fender clean/heavy distortion contrast template songs anyway. overall, really liked the album!

put me in the mood to listen to some tool (10000 days) on my way to bed (heh)... in the unlikely event someone's not familiar -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhMuBMLcW94

Yeah, she was an SF local for a long time... about a year after I discovered her, she relocated up to Portland... and now when she comes to town her shows cost $50... dammit.
I was in the car alone a lot today (Christmas shopping) so I was rolling thru new CDs.  The new Disciple first ( just disclosure, I know nobody is interested in that. Lol) and then most of the new Zep, Celebration Day.

Did your wife at least crack the window a little and leave you some water too?  :D
She's all grown up now and has her own car.   We were shopping for each others gifts today, so other than lunch with her at Chili's, i was on my own all day.  Kind of "Craig style" except that i had a hot wife waiting for me when i got home.  ;)
First up today.  Here's the news.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2523992/Up-flames-Foreclosed-suburban-New-York-home-KISS-guitarist-Ace-Frehley-heavily-damaged-morning-fire.html

and the Song!!! LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPO2rXXjHko

This was one of the first albums I owned.
Frehley's house on 3.1 acres is worth about $735,000. The guitarist owes more than $700,000 on it, in addition to $20,000 in back taxes.

THAT'S not a good situation to be in!  ;D

Do you think it got hotter than hell in there?  :D

(BTW - Those costumes should not be seen in sunlight - lol!)
Tonight starts with Elsiane - Hybrid.  Sort of like a downtempo Bjork.  :)

I'm doing some boring and repetitive spreadsheet/research work so this is perfect in the background.  I think I may revisit some of Charger's similar stuff (Sigur Ros & Explosions In The Sky).

Another one in a similar genre that I really like is Vanessa Daou.  Here is Zipless.
I listened to Elsiane for a while, but I couldn't hang with the girl's voice... a little nasally and it wore me down. I liked the music though.
Then I moved on to the Album Leaf - A Chorus of Storytellers ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuifwlCxE0c ). Kind of like a lot of stuff I like, somewhat chill and mellow post-rock.
I'll be listening to Plankton's new stuff for the foreseeable future. couldn't wait for amazon to stock it any longer... iTunes version will do for now.

I know what you mean about her voice.  Then I got to the end of the album and the first song started again before I stopped the player and I ended up listening a second time which was much better.  Finally went through it a third and that was even better than the second time through.  I like music that gets better with each listen!

Next up were some downtempo Psytrance offerings (that you can download for free if you want). Radioactive Sandwich - Homunculus and Blue Phoenix - Descent To Heaven.   Both were very good.  :)

Today will be Album Leaf then some Explosions in the Sky.
I listened to Tool 10000 days.  Haven't got to Craig's stuff yet.

I've had Them Crooked Vultures on my got to hear list since it's release.  I had forgotten about it, But Sheep's FY to JPJ  ;D reminded me of it, so that's what's up this afternoon.

Dean, did you ever check out the Holdsworth?  Haven't seen replies on it yet, so just wondered

Today, Tres Hombres and that's it til I hit the car...
I did Howie, there were a flurry of posts(not to be confused with furry  ;D) the other night and the page flipped.  Last post on the other page.  I listened to the ones you linked to.  Pretty intense.  Long drive material.  like to the moon. (kidding) :D
LOL, you're right.  mist the last posts on previous pages.  I need to go on a reading furry.   :)
Damn, I'm late to this party.  Let me share what I've been listening to as of late.

Marillion- I love their album Anorkophobia.  Especially the song, "Quartz".  Sometimes I think I identify with this song too much as of late.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45HXu8-WPhE

Flying Colors- "Forever in a Daze"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVMwArreXos

Steven Wilson- "The Raven that Refused to Sing."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZtZIUgY0IM
I also like the original video.  I find the original video very moving.

O.S.I. featuring Steven Wilson- "Shutdown"  Another song I've been identifying with too much as of late.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIVhdvsuTvI

Joe Bonamassa- "Dislocated Boy"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj4VZ2Xa53g

Iced Earth- The albums, "Framing Armageddon" and "The Crucible of Man".

Hmm...  I've got all of the above except I'm obviously behind on my Iced Earth!  The last album I have is the one right before Framing...  Guess I'll have to go check those out.  :)

Missed this the first time.  First couple of songs are pretty good, but I couldn't stop watching the video for the second song (Dead End Friends).  They sure destroyed a lot of stuff!   :D

They have a newer one out as well, "Dystopia"  Good album.  New singer.  That one out a little over a year.  The middle one was pretty good with the return of the original singer for a short stay.TCOM.
Discogs shows an even newer live album as well.  Oh well, I'll check those out later.

I'm stuck listening to the rest of Them Crooked Vultures now.  :)

(Oh yeah, but I had to go and relisten to Quartz first - I keep forgetting just how damn good Marillion can be!)
Hey cool.  New Iced Earth album for release next month.  Here is an official track from Century Media.  I signed up to download the free Title track download.  So, I'll get that and loads of other happy horseshit, I'm sure.   Sounds pretty good, if you like that sort of thing.  I do.

Heh, I never did get to anything else last night after playing Anoraknophobia a couple of times (the fear of rain-protecting devices! ;D ).  Heck, it's playing again now - THEN I'll move on to something new.  ;)
Ok, after some Christian stuff none of you want to hear about (but I have to learn a few songs because I'm playing in church the Sunday after Christmas) , I'm now listening to Friedman and Becker Speed Metal Symphony.  Boy, I haven't listened to this album in 25 years!  LOL
Pink Floyd: Animals.

It's Pink Floyd fucking Animals, what else do I need to say?

Great way to start the day.  Followed by the mind-expanding Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii.

Now listening to Adrian Below Lone Rhino

sorry, didn't look up links to these since I'm playing from my hard drive.
