Listening to Music

charger — Feb 18, 2014Unfortunately it's not in high res, but the sound is pretty good...
I can pretty much guarantee this is the most insane thing you will ever see on Letterman.  Thomas Pridgen on drums alone is worth the price of admission.

The Mars Volta, Wax Simulacra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH11YFqMoB0

Every time I watch it I have to wonder how the hell they picked this song to play--on Letterman?

I dig the Mars Volta!!  I first got into them with the album Deloused in the Comatorium.  Great stuff!
They've got that whole album up on YouBoob so I'll give them another chance.  First song sounded pretty good - maybe it was just the sound from the Letterman show that killed the vocals for me?

Here's the link to Deloused in the Comatorium
Oh yeah, this is MUCH better!  He doesn't sound like Yoko.  I think I can definitely get into this - glad I took a second listen.  :)
Prior to the Mars Volta, I was listening to Flowing Tears.

Serpentine - Full Album

And...

Razorbliss - Full Album

(Originally introduced to me by Richard - say, anyone know what he's been up to?)
Hey, I'm a page behind, but WTF.  I listened to the Airbag and the Slap Guitar dude that Charger posted.  The Airbag surprised me.  Pretty Good stuff.  That El Ten Eleven was just neat.  Dude playing both parts.  Very Cool.  I could not hang with the Vanessa Daou.  I thought I got stuck in the 80's with Sade.  I did like the Stackridge.

I might get caught up before Howie gets out of the "D's".
CraigBert — Feb 20, 2014Oh yeah, this is MUCH better!  He doesn't sound like Yoko.  I think I can definitely get into this - glad I took a second listen.  :)

Yes Craig, Deloused in the Comatorium is amazing stuff.  Awesome! ;)
I need to listen to them some more AND listen to those two Jolly albums again, but I've been stuck on Flowing Tears all day.  Some days are like that.  :)
I listened to The Jolly, The Mash-ups, and The Mars Volta the other day.  The Jolly was good.  I haven't been on a real heavy kick lately, other than the new Iced Earth that was released last month.  The mash-up stuff is interesting how they get the songs to jive together.  I liked the hell out of The Mars Volta.  I listened to the complete Deloused in the Comatorium, and was getting ready to start one of their other albums, but ran out of time.

I've listened to a bunch of old blues albums lately.   BB King - Sings the Blues, Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign, Otis Rush - Cobra.  I also listened to a Duane Allman - Anthology link.  He does an awesome BB medley with his Bro.

Listened to one of my Favorite Johnny Winter albums.  I loved his playing around this time.  1969 - Second Winter.  If you haven't heard it, it's worth a listen.  A pretty fair backing band. LOL  Serve me right to suffer.  His bro plays on quite a few tracks on this one and there are a few bonus tracks on this version worth hearing.  I think he might have took something. :-/

I'll try to get to Craig's 2 offerings tomorrow
I'm almost done with Jolly - then off for some Mars Volta.  :)
I listened to both of the Flowing Tears albums.  I liked the Razorbliss a little better than the first one.  I'm surprised that Richard would turn you on to a Goth Metal band with Female Vocals.   :D

It's been a couple of years since I ran into Rich.  I use to venture over to Prog Palace Radio and chat with him there, but it's been forever since I've popped in there.  Paul would be a better source, though I did find this which is interesting.

And another

Here's a link to the album, though you could probably call him, I'm sure he'd hook you up.

I bought the MP3 Download.  Listening to it now.
Oh that wasn't the only one.  Lacuna Coil, Evanescence and another I can't think of off the top of my head.  Plus I always liked the songs of his that his wife sang on.

The Queen of Goth might be Anne Nurmi of Lacrimosa (most of the songs are in German though).  I think she's above Siouxie Sioux.
Well speaking of S. Lee, here is a link to the latest Fateless Tears.  Released last August.

Listening to it now.  There is some excellent grooves on this.  Seems more Rock oriented.  Really good stuff.  There are some videos on the YT for some FT stuff.  I'm guessing that Rectodude might have a better clue about this as well.
;)
Hey all,

Dean thanks for getting and pitching DoG and NAP here, tis appreciated.

Glad to see you are still kicking :)

for those interested here is the last video we did for FT,

also Sue and I are in a new project, with the album coming out in a couple weeks.

on the listening front,
been into Muse's last two albums a bit...
outside of that been hitting up stuff from the 70s by and large, mixed with some Joe Bonamassa/ BCC stuff.

Havent really been into Gothic, Prog, or Metal anything in a while.

I did like the new DT, Fates Warning.... DevTow's Retinal Cricus, also looking forward to his last DTP album.  But sadly, most heavy stuff has become even more rehashed than it was or is just crab walking garbage.

Must be getting old... haha...
Hey, hey!  I was beginning to think you were Gange Gone.  Thanks for checking in Richard!  :)

Good to see that you guys have been busy!  I may have to invest in some new FT tunage once a couple more things sell on fleaBay.  :D
Well, There ya go Craig.  That's how you dig somebody up.  Google and YouTube. LOL !  'Course it helps to know their name.

I enjoyed both albums, Rich.  The DoG surprised me.  Way heavy, in a good way.  The video that I found on the making of DoG made more sense on second watch after I had heard the album.  I dig the concept epics.  With a Historical twist.  Imagine that.

The FT is Really good.  I was surprised that it was less Heavy metal.  Still heavy, but more like hard rock.  Very Good stuff.  Sounded like maybe a guest or two on that?  Awesome stuff.  I saw the EP's and one other that I missed.  I also listened to a track that you and sue did from 2008 with another drummer, can't remember the name.  That was on YT.

Good to see you're still kickin' as well. :D
nod, well things here tend to be chaotic at best, between work, life and music.

well I hope you like if you do. Pathless Land will be to your liking as well I think. Since its more prog rock/70s rock based. EC's Keyboard work brings a different component to things.  PL is a full band concept.  Daron (in Viggenblot with me) plays bass and writes lyrics, Sue sings, Ec plays keys and he and I trade guitar solos, and then I handle rhythm gtr and drums, EC and I handle production together.

yeah, It was something I had to do,  it album is 3 years old now and was a one time project. Lyrics dont hit me very often.

for similar heavy thing check Viggenblot, no videos, sorry. but here is the link to our last album on the labels website. Daron and I do this project, though EC does sing on 2 tracks.

only one guest EC, he sings backups and plays a guitar solo on Enagysma: Death Spiral.  Rest of it is just Sue and I.

yeah well lets see there is quite a few releases since I really participated here, and 2 solo releases as well.  All available through BFM/

Not sure who you are talking about we havent done anything with a drummer, If you mean Frozen Mist, Jamie umm, constructs things, isnt a musician per say... the joys of Fruity Loops and synthesis. but we did work a bit with him back then.

My world now musically is Pathless Land, Viggenblot, at some point maybe FT again, (PL and FT are on very similar ground so no need to duplicate ourselves) and then Solo stuff.  Keeps me busy along with the occasional mix or master project.
Yes, it was the Frozen Mist.  It came up when I googled R.B.  That's when I started digging around and found the DoG and then went looking for FT stuff.  The Last I had bought was My Doom Box.
ah MDB, so long ago, almost another world...

Yeah FM that was an interesting thing for about 5 minutes then it got bad fast, mainly happened due to the Label we almost signed with back then.

fortunately sanity prevailed, Been with BFM since 2010 and Karl has treated is very well.

given the trends in music where few buy, and most figure out how to get it for free, music has to be a love...

Well don't be such a stranger.  (Coming from a guy who went missing for a few years himself)  This thread has been really good for listening material.  A wealth of good tunes running the genre spectrum.  Some you like, some, not so much, but well worth the listens.  Tell Sue hello for me.
Yeah Rich, your evolution has been fun to follow.  Pretty sure most people here would be surprised by the changes like Dean was.

I for one dig the heavy groove aspect you have lately, as well as the layering of parts, although you've always done that, your approach has evolved.  Very cool stuff :)

And people should definitely check out your bass playing on the Rushy stuff :)
Oh!  and the videos have been excellent :)
thanks Paul, has been an adventure, ongoing at that.

always try to bring new things in, and change up the vibe of my life.
Ok so I am a little behind in this one.  I just got done reading "Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page" which i highly recommend to everybody with any appreciation for Zep.  One of the things mentioned towards the end was a redone/remastered version of the soundtrack to the film "The Song Remains the Same".  Now I was not a huge fan of the film, but I absolutely loved and wore out my vinyl version of the album - that and Physical Graffiti were just listened to probably more than any other albums over my lifetime.

Anyhow, I was in BestBuy and saw the remastered version and thought, ok, it's probably going to be overcompressed, but there are 6 previously unreleased tracks on it from the same series of shows at MSG. So I picked it up for those.  It turns out that its actually different versions of all the songs - it may be the ones from the film or yet another night, I think there were actually 3 nights of shows.  Pretty cool for a Zep freak like myself.  And yes its a bit over compressed, at times Jimmy's guitar suffers a bit, and the beginning of Dazed and Confused is WAY louder than on the original.  But all that aside, it's well worth worth the $14 I paid.

Some notes: I think Robert sounds better on the original version than this one.  Maybe I'm just more used to his adlibs on the original and miss those.  Another thing is that it seems like Jimmy gets confused on the solo in Celebration Day and somehow ends up playing a bar ahead of the rest of the group (I think maybe this happened in the film version as well?).  The version of Since I've Been Loving you is absolutely killer. Lots of great stuff.
I don't have an ignore list, and I have listened to almost everything posted above, here at work.  But I've been on a "reliving the glory days of my playing" binge of late.  I recently performed an illegal download of all the Mahogany Rush albums, and the 4 Pat Travers albums (all of this material I own on vinyl).    Pat Travers Live Go For What You Know, and Mahagony Rush IV and Live were at the absolute TOP of my "put on and play along with " albums back then. (And the MR after the Live album).   Go play those Frank Marino albums (note for note of course) and get back to me.  I think playing Frank Marino improved my playing as much as any other player I tried to emulate.  That dude has a jam riff style and he is FAST!  Keep up with him and you are doing something.

Paul, interesting news.  I'll definitely pick that up.  Ha, I wore out 3 8 tracks to Song Remains The Same!  That and "Double Live Gonzo" by the Nuge.  Those double length 8 tracks didn't last!  Oh, and the ELP live I put up a couple weeks ago.  Wore out at least 3 of those as well before I FINALLY got my Pioneer SUpertuner/Cassette player for Christmas my senior year and switched to real hifi in the car!   ;D
Now THIS is some good stuff!  :D
CraigBert — Mar 01, 2014Now THIS is some good stuff!  :D

Thank goodness there was an ad first :)

Sorry, I should have prefaced it with "Hey Ironsheep!"  ;D

(Ironically, I wasn't joking in that other thread.  There are times that I like listening to this! Oh well, it's a million times better than John Tesh!  ;) )
Of course, I'd rather be listening to the second CD by Paul Evans, but it's not out yet...  :D
haha touche...
gah, yanni link! eff... lol.
My Blu Ray copy of THIS showed up today (several days sooner than the projected 'tuesday' date - ha)!! Tonight was supposed to be double feature night, Gravity & Thor The Dark World...but after just sampling the first two tracks, yeah, something's getting bumped lol!! Must watch the rest of this concert! Haven't heard MacAlpines Edge of Insanity stuff in eons, he's in SICK form here on 'The Stranger'...

Yeah, that was ok.

I wonder how many damn line-ups Portnoy is in anyway...  Heck, they couldn't even come up with a name for this one!  ;D
Is he in Portnoy's Complaint, by Phillip Roth?

My current "highly recommended" is this insane fucking stop motion of Zappa's "Baby Snakes".  This is in three parts.  It's worth making it through because drugs.

I don't normally get into cookie, but I will make an exception for anything Devin Townsend is involved in.

This is some of the trippier Zappa I've heard.  Even more fun to see it.

Genesis - "And then there were three..."
Coincidence--I was just listening to "Selling England by the Pound"...
After checking out Bingewood's links, I thought I'd add:

We named our dart league team after THIS.

:)
Who getsta be Willy?  heh heh
lol on ATTW3 and SEBTP, Spun Duke and Lamb lays down at work today.
I do love The Lamb Lays Down on Broadway.
Getting Caught up.  FYI on the Zep stuff for Rectodude.  There was a Zep DVD that came out that had a bunch of alternate video from the MSG shows.  It's an awesome DVD.  Early Video up to their last shows with Jimmy playing a Strat.  Here's a rundown of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin_DVD

I still listen to a lot of Pat Travers.  I have a lot of his newer Blues stuff.  I listened to a little bit of "Putting it Straight" just the other day.  One of my all time favorite Riffs is on that.  That's also on of my favorite all time album covers.  The back side shows the dude all blown away with the room all wrecked.  Here's the riff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRNHiWJDUTk
Dean, I LOVE that riff too!  Always have.

I'll check out the Zep stuff.
Well, I blew right past the Yanni Link.  Self Flagellation is prefered to that.

The Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian was really busy.  Thank god there are no more members in that band.  I needed a nap after that. ;D

The Zappa claymation was awesome.  That Bruce Bickford had me laughing at his pureness.  I used to buy some smoke from these folks that lived in a commune in the mountains of VA.  These people were like Bickford.  I watched the whole movie that Bingewood posted.  Amazing dude.  When Zappa was quizzing him on the fly was hilarious.  I was surprised I had never seen any of that.  I listened to the complete Hot Rats.  I'll have to revisit some more Zappa.  I had listened to a bit of him years ago, but not a great deal

The Strapping Young Lad is something I like to listen to at times.  Great for Highway driving, in heavy traffic.  LOL

I listened to the Genesis - And Then There Were Three.  That's about all of the Genesis I can handle in one sitting.  I'll have to catch the other three Genesis albums over the weekend.

The Yanni link was only up there for Ironsheep's benefit (from a comment he made).  Easily ignored!   ;D

Speaking of the many Portnoy lineups, I can't remember if we covered THIS ONE yet.  Couldn't find the whole album uploaded to YouBoob yet, but it's good.  :)

Oh, and one of MY favorite Genesis albums is Three Sides Live.
Just saw that you're now a "Re-member" DM - lol!  In another forum it shows you as an "Ex-member."  I guess both are better than being a "Dis-member!"  ;D
